Monsoon Triggers: Natural & Homoeopathic Remedies for Asthma

As the first rains arrive, the air feels fresher, but for asthma patients, the monsoon often brings more trouble than relief. This chronic respiratory ailment, where the airways become narrow, inflamed, and generate extra mucus, makes it particularly difficult to breathe. Moreover, it can lead to symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

If it is not treated properly, asthma can impact day-to-day work and lead to life-threatening attacks. To know how to take care of your asthma this monsoon, we talked to Dr Ritula Talwar, Homoeopathic Physician & Senior Manager, Scientific Support, Zeon Lifescience, to get expert tips.

Why Asthma Triggers During Monsoon?

Monsoon is the season of humidity that gives rise to mould growth, dust mites and airborne allergies, which worsen and trigger asthma symptoms. The weather is unpredictable in monsoon, and there are sudden temperature drops, dampness in the air and an increase in viral infections that irritate the airways and lead to more frequent breathlessness and wheezing.

“Dampness in walls and stagnant water are breeding places for pollutants that can trigger flare-ups. Allergens also rise during monsoon due to the moist environment and damp settings, making it hard to control asthma,” said Talwar.

This is why the monsoon acts as a powerful environmental stress for those suffering from asthma, and one must be extra cautious during the season.

Homoeopathy Remedies to Manage Asthma During Monsoon

Antimonium Tartarum, Arsenicum Album and Tart, and Ipecac are common homoeopathic remedies used to treat breathlessness and wheezing,” advised Dr Talwar.  Also, view homoeopathy as a complementary medicine that helps you get rid of the root cause and should not be considered as a replacement, especially in acute episodes.

“A balance of conventional and homoeopathic treatment can lead to long-term healing, as homoeopathic remedies provide long-term immune support while conventional methods manage immediate symptoms,” she added.

Which Natural or Homoeopathic remedies Help Ease Coughing and Wheezing?

There are many medicines available in the market for easing breathlessness and wheezing during damp weather, but Blatta Orientalis is one of the best medicines I would recommend,” said Talwar. It is useful in damp around in rainy weather and in humid weather.

“Natrum Sulphuricum is another medicine in homoeopathy that is specifically effective in damp weather-induced asthma. It helps in reducing mucus build-up, easing chest tightness and creating a calming effect. This is especially effective in asthma patients who are more sensitive to humidity,” he added.

According to Dr Talwar, Some Other Effective Medications Include:

  • Arsenicum Album: helpful for someone suffering from breathlessness worsened by cold air or lying down.
  • Antimonium Tart: helps clear mucus and rattling coughs.

Natural remedies for Asthma include:

  • Taking a steam with eucalyptus oil.
  • Consuming ginger tea and turmeric milk may help ease mild symptoms.

“However, these should be personalised remedies and be taken under professional supervision,” advised Talwar.

Precautions to Take in Asthma Episodes During Monsoon

  • Some simple but effective things for asthma patients to do during monsoon include:
  • Keeping the house clean and ventilated.
  • To keep kitchens and bathrooms mould-free, clean them with baking soda-based solutions or vinegar.
