To understand more about this trending body modification, we reached out to Dr Neeharika Goyal, Consultant Dermatologist, Svastam Wellness Skin Clinic, New Delhi, who explained what dermal piercings really are and what to keep in mind before getting one.

Why Is North West in the News?

North West, daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, was spotted in a recent video flaunting two shiny dermal studs embedded on the top of her middle finger. The video quickly went viral across social media platforms, with fans both surprised and curious about the unique choice of piercing placement.

While the Kardashian kids have often made headlines for their fashion sense, this particular look stood out because finger dermal piercings are quite rare and require careful aftercare. Experts say such piercings can be tricky, given that fingers are exposed to frequent contact and movement.

According to reports, North’s piercings were done under professional supervision, but many online users raised questions about safety and whether it’s suitable for children.

What Is a Dual Dermal Finger Piercing?

Dr Neeharika Goyal explains, “A dermal piercing is different from a regular piercing because it’s not done through the skin, but into it. The jewellery sits flat on the surface, while a small anchor is inserted underneath the skin to hold it in place.”Dermal Finger Piercings

In North’s case, she appears to have two dermal piercings, called a dual dermal setup, positioned side by side on her finger. “This type of piercing is decorative and looks elegant, but it’s also one of the more delicate forms of body modification because of its location,” Dr Goyal adds.

Dermal piercings can be done almost anywhere on the body, but when placed on areas like fingers, they’re more prone to irritation and infection. “The skin on the hands moves constantly and comes into contact with soap, water, and bacteria, which can make healing harder,” says Dr Goyal.

Are Finger Dermal Piercings Safe?

Dr Goyal says dermal piercings, when done by a trained professional using sterile tools, can be safe, but the risk of complications is higher on the hands and fingers. “Because the area is so mobile, there’s always a chance of snagging, displacement, or rejection where the body pushes the jewellery out.”Dermal Finger Piercing

Aftercare plays a huge role in recovery. “It’s important to keep the area clean, avoid excessive handwashing in the first few days, and stay away from tight gloves or anything that could irritate the piercing,” the doctor advises.

The healing process can take anywhere from three to six months, depending on the person’s skin type and how well they care for it. “Even then, dermal piercings can sometimes reject over time. So it’s important to go into it with realistic expectations,” Dr Goyal notes.

What to Know Before Getting a Dermal Piercing

Dr Goyal shares a few key points anyone considering a dermal piercing should keep in mind:

  • Choose a licensed professional: “Make sure the studio follows hygiene standards and uses sterile tools.”
  • Placement matters: “Avoid areas with too much friction or movement, like hands or feet, if you’re new to dermals.”
  • Aftercare is non-negotiable: “Gently clean the area with saline solution and avoid touching it unnecessarily.”
  • Watch for signs of infection: “Redness, pain, pus, or swelling are red flags. See a doctor if you notice any of these.”
