In the June 20 episode of ‘The Kardashians,’ Kim shared with her friends that she had successfully pitched a comedy movie to Netflix, after presenting the idea to various studios. The film, ‘The Fifth Wheel’, will feature Kim, 43, in a leading role and as a producer.
However, expressing some of her fears about being an actor, she said, "I feel like you need less Botox for more emotion, and I don’t have it.” This is another addition to countless such confessions by celebrities and public figures about the compromises one has to make while taking the plastic surgery route.
Downsides of Getting Botox
Botox has become increasingly popular as a quick fix for wrinkles and fine lines, promising a more youthful appearance without the need for invasive surgery. While many people swear by its effects, it's essential to be aware of the potential downsides and risks associated with this cosmetic treatment.
To understand the possible drawbacks of getting Botox, the Onlymyhealth team spoke to Dr Nivedita Dadu, Skin Specialist, Founder and Chairman, Dadu Medical Centre.
Temporary Results
Botox injections provide temporary results, typically lasting between three to six months. “This means that to maintain the desired appearance, you must undergo regular treatments. This can become both time-consuming and costly over time,” explained Dr Dadu.
Potential Side Effects
While Botox is generally considered safe, it is not without side effects, explained Dr Dadu. Some individuals may experience:
- Bruising and Swelling: These are common at the injection site and usually subside within a few days.
- Headaches: Some people report mild to moderate headaches following treatment.
- Drooping eyelids or eyebrows: Incorrectly administered Botox can cause temporary drooping, which can take weeks to resolve.
- Muscle weakness: Nearby muscles may become temporarily weakened, affecting facial expressions.
Allergic Reactions
Although rare, allergic reactions to Botox can occur. “Symptoms might include itching, rash, dizziness, and difficulty breathing. It's crucial to discuss any known allergies with your provider before treatment,” said Dr Dadu.
Overuse and Misuse
Repeated Botox injections can lead to overuse, where the muscles become too relaxed, causing a ‘frozen’ appearance. According to Oxford Academic, this can result in a lack of facial expressions, making you appear less natural. Over time, misuse can also lead to muscle atrophy, where the muscles weaken and shrink from lack of use.

Cost Considerations
“Botox treatments can be expensive, and since the effects are temporary, the costs can add up quickly. It's important to consider whether you can afford the ongoing expense to maintain your results,” said Dr Dadu.
Potential for Addiction
According to Dr Dadu, the desire to maintain a youthful appearance can become addictive for some individuals. This can lead to an unhealthy reliance on cosmetic treatments and a distorted self-image. “It's essential to approach Botox with a balanced perspective and realistic expectations,” said Dr Dadu.
Medical Complications
According to a Polish study published in Advances in Dermatology and Allergology, in rare cases, Botox can lead to more severe complications such as:
- Botulism-like Symptoms: Though extremely rare, Botox can spread to other parts of the body, causing symptoms like muscle weakness and difficulty breathing.
- Vision problems: If Botox migrates near the eyes, it can cause vision issues, including blurred or double vision.
- Difficulty Swallowing or Speaking: This can occur if the Botox affects muscles related to these functions.
Psychological Impact
Some individuals may experience psychological effects from Botox, such as anxiety or depression, especially if the results do not meet their expectations. “It's important to have a thorough consultation with a qualified professional to understand the potential psychological impact,” suggested Dr Dadu.
While Botox can be an effective solution for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, it's crucial to be aware of the potential downsides. Temporary results, possible side effects, and the risk of overuse or misuse are all factors to consider before treatment. Always consult with a licensed and experienced practitioner, and ensure you have a clear understanding of both the benefits and risks involved.
