Is Your Gut Health Causing Your Brain Fog?

Poor gut health may contribute to brain fog through the gut-brain connection. Read ahead to know how diet and lifestyle habits can help you improve both digestion and mental clarity.

Brain fog is non-medical term that is often used to describe the feeling of difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, or mental fatigue, and it is a common complaint in today’s fast-paced lifestyle. While it is mostly attributed to stress, lack of sleep, and nutritional deficiency, recent studies suggest that our gut health may also play a significant role in how clearly the brain functions.

Scientists refer to the gut-brain axis the connection between the gut and the brain, which is a communication pathway between digestion and central nervous system. In an exclusive interactio n with the editorial team of Onlymyhealth, Dr Pooja Pillai, Consultant – Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, explained that disruptions in gut health can influence mood, cognition, and mental clarity. Read ahead to know everything she shared with us.

Link Between Gut and Brain

The gut and brain constantly communicate through nerves, hormones, and chemical signals. “The digestive system is home to trillions of microorganisms collectively known as the gut microbiome, which plays an important role in digestion, immunity, and even brain function,” Dr Pillai stated.

A healthy microbiome regulates inflammation, enhances nutrient absorption, and secretes neurotransmitters that define mood and cognition. Once the balance of microbes is disrupted, the information processing and concentration of the brain can also be impaired.

How Poor Gut Health May Contribute to Brain Fog

Dr Pillai highlighted that when gut health is compromised, several physiological changes may occur that can indirectly affect brain function. Biased bacteria, gut inflammation or poor nutrient absorption may all contribute to brain-fog symptoms.

For example, chronic gut inflammation can trigger systemic inflammation, which extends to the brain. The unhealthy microbiome also dulls the synthesis of neurotransmitters that are needed to improve memory and concentration.

Common Signs of an Unhealthy Gut

Some digestive symptoms indicate that you have an unhealthy gut. Dr Pillai suggested to look for these signs:

  • Persistent bloating
  • Irregular bowel movements
  • Frequent indigestion
  • Excessive gas
  • Food sensitivities

“Although their effects are mostly on the digestive system, the symptoms may also lead to fatigue, mood fluctuations or lack of mental clarity,” she noted.

Lifestyle Factors That Affect Gut Health

Several everyday habits can also influence gut bacteria. “What we eat is important, particularly when it does not contain enough fiber, fermented food, and essential nutrients. The gut is also disturbed by chronic stress, insufficient sleep, processed food, and regular medication intakes. In the long run they are detrimental to digestion and health,” Dr Pillai explained.

How to Improve Gut Health and Mental Clarity

Here are some expert-approved lifestyle changes that can help to improve gut health and mental wellbeing:

  • Eating a fibre-rich diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes
  • Including fermented vegetables, such as yoghurt, kefir or fermented vegetables.
  • Managing stress
  • Sleeping enough to enhance general body performance
  • Keeping the body hydrated to aid in digestion and uptake of nutrients

Bottomline

The brain and gut are still closely interrelated. Brain fog and fatigue may be caused by digestive issues. Experts recommend maintaining a healthy gut through balanced nutrition and lifestyle habits may play an important role in supporting both digestive health and cognitive function.
