Why Grated Packaged Cheese Is Making News?
More than one million bags of cheese, which were sold at well-known stores like Walmart, Target and Aldi were recalled, as per a recently updated Food and Drug Administration (FDA) report. This was done after the Ohio-based manufacturer was warned that these products may have metal fragments in them.
Great Lakes Cheese Co, the Hiram, Ohio-based firm, initiated this action. It affects multiple brands at major retailers. The recall started on October 3. The reason cited was the presence of potential metal fragments in supplier raw material. The FDA classified this action on December 1, and the recall remains active. The affected cheese — such as mozzarella, Italian-style blends, pizza blends and mozzarella-based mixes — was distributed in 31 states and Puerto Rico, including at retailers like Walmart, Target and Aldi.

However, they still provide protein and calcium, which are good for bones and muscles. To stay healthy, it is better to use packaged grated cheese occasionally and in small amounts. Choose brands with fewer additives or make grated cheese at home from fresh cheese.”

- Over-reliance on packaged cheese, instead of fresh options, can reduce the intake of natural nutrients like protein and calcium.
- Using it occasionally and in moderation is generally safe, and choosing brands with fewer additives can reduce side effects.
Can Packaged Grated Cheese Contain Metal Fragments?

“Yes, packaged shredded cheese can sometimes contain tiny metal fragments, but this is very rare. During the manufacturing process, metal detectors are used to prevent contamination, but small particles from machinery, equipment, or packaging could accidentally get into the cheese. These fragments are usually too small to see, but they can be harmful if swallowed,” answers Ms Raj.
She continues, “Most of the reputable brands follow strict safety guidelines and quality checks. They make sure their products are safe for consumption. To reduce risk, always buy cheese from trusted brands, check the packaging for damage, and avoid products with unusual taste, smell, or texture. Reporting any suspected contamination to the manufacturer can help prevent similar issues in the future.”
Which Is The Healthiest Grated Cheese?
Last but not the least, let us try and understand which grated cheese is the safest and healthiest of all. “The healthiest grated cheese is generally the one that is minimally processed, low in sodium, and made using natural ingredients. Fresh cheeses like Parmesan, Pecorino Romano, or aged cheddar that are grated at home are better because they do not contain added preservatives or anti-caking agents,” says the expert.
“These cheeses are packed with protein and calcium, which are good for bones and muscles, and provide essential vitamins like B12 and phosphorus. Choosing low-fat or reduced-sodium versions can make them even healthier, especially for people with heart or blood pressure concerns. Organic cheeses from grass-fed cows can also be a good choice because they have fewer additives. Using these cheeses in moderation ensures taste and nutrition without negative health effects,” concludes Ms Raj.
