Social Media is filled with unique skincare routines and new hacks for glowing skin. Among a huge range of beauty regimes, a new hack was discovered by an influencer. Arnakshi Patgiri posted a video where she was using a lubricant as a primer for her makeup. She claimed to have been using this hack for around three months for acne-prone skin.
“This is water-based and it also is super hydrating and does not contain any fragrance,” explained the influencer. Arnakshi claimed that her skin was sticky but not too much as the foundation blended easily. Regarding the same, we reached out to our expert and asked whether it was beneficial or not.

Dr Smriti Naswa Singh, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Lifestyle Medicine Physician, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, expressed significant concerns regarding the rising trend of using lubricant gel as a makeup primer. She firmly criticized this practice, emphasizing the lack of scientific evidence supporting its efficacy. "We don't treat without trials of the medicine," she stated, highlighting the importance of clinical validation in dermatological practices.
This viral phenomenon was notably referenced in the popular show ‘Emily in Paris,’ where a character's skincare product was originally designed as a lubricant. Despite its popularity, Dr. Singh's stance is clear, the application of such products on the skin can lead to adverse effects without proper research backing.
How Primer Helps The Skin?
Primers serve multiple functions in makeup applications. Some of them are mentioned below.
- Creating a barrier: They protect the skin from makeup and environmental factors.
- Hydration: Many primers contain moisturizing agents that help maintain skin moisture.
- Evening out skin tone: They can minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines.
- Longevity: Primers help makeup adhere better and last longer throughout the day.
How To Get Acne-Prone Skin?
Dr Pooja Chopra, Consultant-Dermatology, Aakash Healthcare, New Delhi, shared that excessive sebum is one of the primary causes of acne. Overactive oil glands can block pores, leading to skin problems like acne. "Getting clear and glowing skin can be tricky, especially for acne-prone skin, which needs special care to avoid breakouts," explained Dr Chopra. The expert also shared a list of helpful ingredients that can improve your skincare routine.
- Salicylic Acid: This ingredient is a type of beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that gently exfoliates the skin. It helps clear clogged pores, reduces inflammation, and prevents acne.
- Benzoyl Peroxide: Known for its antibacterial properties, benzoyl peroxide fights acne-causing bacteria which is commonly found in cleansers, creams, and spot treatments.
- Niacinamide: Also called Vitamin B3, niacinamide helps control oil (sebum) production and reduces redness or inflammation. It’s often included in serums and moisturisers.
- Hyaluronic Acid: While not directly an acne treatment, hyaluronic acid is essential for keeping the skin hydrated without clogging pores.
- Retinoids: Derived from Vitamin A, retinoids speed up cell turnover, clear clogged pores, and prevent blackheads and whiteheads (comedones).
Conclusion
While the expert has criticised the trend of using gimmicky hacks like lubricant gels as makeup primers, it is essential to consult a skincare specialist before starting any new skincare routine. Given the lack of scientific evidence supporting the use of lubricants for this purpose, individuals should carefully assess their skin health and potential risks. Prioritising professional advice can help ensure that your skincare choices are safe and effective.
