Delhi Influencer Uses Green Chilli As ‘Natural Lip Plumper’: Facial Doctor Shares It Can Cause Damage To Skin

In a viral video, Delhi-based influencer Shubhangi Anand showcased a chilli lip-plumping hack that has the internet in splits. She posted a viral Instagram video where she cuts a green chilli and rubs it on her lips as a "natural lip plumper." The video, which has over 24 million views, sparked mixed reactions among the netizens. However, she was trolled for her experiment and for promoting unrealistic beauty standards and risky methods.

Reacting to the same, Dr Teena Singh, a facial aesthetics expert from Lucknow shared how fancy acts to get more views on the video is harmful for the skin.

Facial Doctor Reacts To Video Claiming Chillies Will Make Lips Plumper

“In reality, if anyone applies chilli or any such compound on their lips, irritation will occur first. This irritation can lead to inflammation, resulting in vasodilation, which is the increase in blood flow and expansion of blood vessels. While this may create a temporary plumper appearance, it is not a reliable or safe method for achieving fuller lips,” said Dr Teena Singh, a facial aesthetics expert and hair transplant surgeon from Lucknow, as per her Instagram.

Dr Singh strongly advised against trying this hack, explaining that it poses significant risks, especially for those with sensitive skin. “If you have cracked or chapped lips, using chilli can lead to severe inflammation and further damage to the skin,” she cautioned.

Is It Scientifically Safe?

The use of capsaicin, the active compound in chillies responsible for their heat, can indeed cause temporary swelling and redness. However, this reaction is more of an irritating response than a genuine volumising effect. Experts warn that the potential adverse effects including allergic reactions, pigmentation issues, and long-term damage far outweigh any short-lived cosmetic benefits.

Dermatologists recommend safer alternatives for lip enhancement, such as over-the-counter lip plumpers containing hyaluronic acid or professional treatments conducted under medical supervision. These options not only provide more effective results but also ensure the health of the delicate skin on the lips.

Takeaway

The trend of using green chillies as a lip plumper, popularised by influencer Shubhangi Anand, has sparked concern among experts regarding its safety and effectiveness. Dr Teena Singh warns that applying chillies can cause irritation and inflammation, leading to more harm than good. The temporary plumping effect is merely an irritant response rather than a true enhancement.

Dermatologists recommend safer alternatives, such as lip plumpers with hyaluronic acid or professional treatments. They are more reliable results without compromising skin health. As beauty trends evolve, individuals need to prioritise their well-being over fleeting fads.
