When To Get An Orthodontic Evaluation?

Orthodontic evaluation helps measure the person's bite and detect issues that need correction. Your children should get a professional orthodontic evaluation before losing their baby teeth, about seven to nine years of age. It is the best way to identify potential issues, however, not every child needs orthodontic treatment. The best age to get an orthodontic treatment depends upon the bite's severity and the reason behind the misalignment of the teeth. Let us understand what our expert has to say about the causes, risks and the best time to get braces.

Reasons To Get Orthodontic Evaluation

Dr. Kambley said that detecting problems at an early age will make your chances of developing a jaw disorder much lower. Your child may need orthodontic evaluation assistance due to any of the following reasons:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Misalignment of the jaw
  • Biting and chewing problems
  • Teeth or Jaw Grinding
  • Constantly sucking on objects or your thumb
  • If your child is losing baby teeth very quickly or too many at once.
  • Mouth breathing
  • Sleep disorder
  • Teeth damaged due to injury
  • Overbite or under-bite

Ideal Age To Get Braces

Dr. Kambley explained that the best time to get braces is when your child has lost most or all of his baby teeth. The main reason for this is simply that it is not very practical to reposition teeth that will eventually fall out. In addition, your child's jawbone is not fully developed at this age and is in the process of growing and forming. Shifting teeth and correcting most bite issues will be easier when your child's jawbone is not fully developed. He added that this usually happens between 11 to 14 years of age. In the cases of girls, the average is 10 to 12 years, whereas, in boys, the average age is 12 to 14 years. However, the best time to get braces depends on various factors.

Most orthodontic patients get braces between the ages of 14 and 20. Moving the teeth into place during this age range becomes easier because all adult teeth have emerged into the jaw and are maturing.

Types Of Orthodontic Treatment

There are various types of orthodontic treatment that your doctor can use to align your teeth correctly. Some of the treatments that can be used are:

  • Braces(traditional metal wires)
  • Clear braces (plastic aligners or Invisalign)
  • Elastics
  • Retainers
  • Headgear

When To Visit A Doctor

Regular dental visits with your child's dentist are the best way to determine whether your child needs an orthodontic appointment. This will help in identifying your child's teeth problems or jaw structure.

Is It Too Late To Get Braces?

If you are wondering whether you can get braces after growing up, it's never too late. However, strong teeth and jaws are important to get braces when you are an adult. When adult teeth stop growing, it becomes more challenging to correct more severe misalignment, and treatment involves more than orthodontics. You can opt for braces other than metal ones, like clear braces and invisalign.

You should schedule regular visits to your orthodontist for your children for a proper evaluation and faster treatment. It is easier and more convenient to get braces in childhood, however, you can opt for one at any age.
