Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections affecting millions worldwide, predominantly women. While antibiotics are frequently given as a treatment for UTIs, adopting a healthy lifestyle, which includes a balanced diet and frequent exercise, might be just as important. In this article, Dr Sonamm Tiwari, Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, Hiranandani Hospital Vashi-A Fortis Network Hospital, explained UTI, its signs, and how to manage it.
Understanding UTIs
UTI is a bacterial infection that can affect the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. The primary cause of UTIs is the migration of bacteria from the urethra into the bladder.

UTI Signs And Symptoms
Dr Tiwari listed the symptoms of UTI as follows:
- Frequent Urination
Feeling the need to urinate more often than usual, even if the amount expelled is minimal.
- Burning Sensation
When urinating, you may feel a burning feeling or pain.
- Strong-Smelling Urine
Noticing changes in the appearance or odour of urine, such as cloudiness or a more pungent smell.
- Pelvic Pain
Feeling discomfort, pressure, or pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic region.
- Blood in Urine
Observing pink, red, or brown-coloured urine, indicating the presence of blood.
Important Practices For UTI Prevention
Stay Hydrated
One of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent UTIs is by maintaining proper hydration. Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to flush out bacteria from the urinary tract, reducing the risk of infection. Aim to drink water every hour and increase your fluid intake if you engage in activities that promote sweating.
Practice Good Hygiene
Maintaining good hygiene practices is crucial for UTI prevention. Here are some important habits to keep in mind:
- Wipe from front to back after using the restroom to prevent the spread of bacteria from the anal area to the urethra.
- Empty your bladder before and after sexual intercourse to aid in the elimination of any bacteria that might have entered the urinary tract.
- Avoid using harsh soaps, douches, and scented feminine hygiene products, as they can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the urinary tract.
Incorporate UTI-Fighting Foods
Here are some foods recommended by Dr Tiwari that you should incorporate into your diet:
Cranberries And Blueberries
Berries contain compounds that help prevent bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract walls, reducing the likelihood of infection. Fresh berries or unsweetened cranberry juice can be beneficial.
Vitamin C-Rich Foods
Vitamin C boosts the immune system and creates an acidic environment in the urine, which can inhibit bacterial growth. Include citrus fruits, strawberries, and leafy greens in your diet.
Fitness Practices For UTI Prevention
Strengthen Pelvic Floor Muscles
Weak pelvic floor muscles can contribute to urinary incontinence and increase the risk of UTIs. Strengthening these muscles can be done through pelvic floor exercises, such as kegel. Regularly practising these exercises can improve bladder control and reduce the likelihood of infection.
Regular Exercise
Regular exercise helps to maintain a healthy immune system and can help to avoid urinary tract infections. Include physical activities in your regimen including yoga, swimming, jogging, and walking.
Maintain A Healthy Weight
Being overweight strains the bladder and urethra, increasing the risk of UTIs. Maintaining a healthy weight by including regular exercise and a well-balanced diet promotes optimal urinary tract function.
