If your digestive system is weak, you are prone to food poisoning. But this is not a potential cause as food poisoning is primarily caused when you eat contaminated, spoiled or toxic food. These have either germs, bacteria, virus or harmful chemicals that disrupt gut functions and cause stomach pain, diarrhoea, inflammation, vomiting, nausea, etc. issues. Even though you cannot see the germs, you can identify probable foods whose consumption may cause food poisoning. Also, this differs from person to person. For example, some people get food poisoning even after drinking tap water while some people don’t face any issue despite eating unhygienic street food.
This is one of the common bacteria that is associated with food poisoning. This is present mostly in undercooked meat, contaminated water and stale dough. It is advised to cook meat properly and then eat as cooking eliminates germs from the meat and makes it safe for consumption. You should not also consume water from unknown sources especially areas that have sewage water and drainage brooks. Mild symptoms of E. Coli infection include vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain but these may progress into watery and blood diarrhoea depending upon the type of E. Coli and its effect on the body.
This bacteria commonly causes Typhoid which is a chronic form of food poisoning. Most people know that typhoid is caused due to consumption of contaminated food or water. Salmonella bacteria is present in a lot of vegetables and it can be present in water too. Food poisoning caused by this bacteria is called salmonellosis. You can experience mild to major gastroenteritis issues including loose motions, diarrhoea and acute stomach pain. This condition generally causes prolonged diarrhoea.
Foods that cause food poisoning
There are certain food items that have higher risk of causing food poisoning. Here are some of the common ones:
- Raw and undercooked eggs
- Raw and undercooked poultry and meat
- Sprouts(Raw sprouts cause food poisoning and so, one must parboil them to eliminate bacteria)
- Rotten or infected fruits and vegetables
- Raw flour
- Sprouts that are kept for long and consumed raw
- Raw shellfish and seafood
- Unpasteurised dairy products such as milk and cheese
How to prevent food poisoning?
If you are someone whose stomach gets upset every now and then, you must ensure maximum food safety measures to avoid food poisoning. Here are some tips and suggestions:
- Always wash your hands before preparing and eating food. Since our hands have the maximum germs on it, they serve as the entry point to the body.
- Avoid eating raw foods. Either parboil or properly cook them.
- Store hot and cold foods at the appropriate temperatures to avoid germ breeding.
- Avoid consuming foods from unhygienic places.
