Glaucoma Awareness Week: Doctor Lists Superfoods To Maintain Eyesight And Improve Vision


Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that causes damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information from eye to brain. If glaucoma is left untreated, it can further lead to blindness. It usually happens when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. This extra fluid intensifies the pressure on your eye leading to optic nerve damage. 

As per a study, in India, the burden of glaucoma is 11.9 million, and the prevalence of blindness is 8.9 million. Glaucoma contributes to 12.8% of blindness in India. To raise awareness about this eye condition, World Glaucoma Week is being observed from March 10 to March 16 this year. 

In a conversation with OnlyMyHealth, Dr Raksha J Vaishnav, Senior Consultant - Glaucoma and Cataract, Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bangalore, guided us with diet tips for the prevention of glaucoma and improved vision. 

Dr Vaishnav said, “While there is no cure for glaucoma, early detection and treatment can help slow down its progression and prevent further damage to the eyes.” 

When asked how to prevent glaucoma, Dr Vaishnav said, “Apart from regular eye checkups and prescribed treatments, maintaining a healthy diet can also play a crucial role in maintaining eyesight and improving vision.” 

Superfoods To Prevent Glaucoma And Enhance Vision

With the help of Dr Vaishnav, we have listed 5 superfoods that will help you prevent glaucoma and promote your overall eye health. 

1. Leafy greens and vegetables

Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and broccoli are rich in antioxidants. These antioxidants help protect your eyes from the damage caused by free radicals. “They also contain nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are essential for maintaining good vision and preventing age-related macular degeneration, another common cause of blindness,” Dr Vaishnav said. 

2. Fish and lean meats

According to Dr Vaishnav, Fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are essential for maintaining eye health. They help in reducing inflammation and enhance blood flow to the eyes, preventing glaucoma. “Lean meats like chicken and turkey are also good sources of protein, which is essential for building and repairing tissues in the eyes,” said Dr Vaishnav. 

3. Fruits and berries

Fruits and berries rich in vitamin C like oranges, strawberries, and blueberries are great to prevent glaucoma. Vitamin C helps in preventing cell damage and maintaining healthy blood vessels in the eyes. Berries and fruits are also rich in fibre which helps in reducing the risk of diabetes which is a major risk factor for glaucoma. 

4. Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds being small and tiny provide enormous benefits for good eye health. Dr Vaishanav said, “Nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, and sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E, which is vital for maintaining eye health. This vitamin helps in protecting cells from damage caused by oxidative stress and can also slow down the progression of cataracts, another common cause of vision loss.” 

5. Whole grains and legumes

Whole grains like brown rice, oats, and quinoa, and legumes like beans and lentils are rich in zinc, which is essential for promoting eyesight. Dr Vaishnav said, “Zinc helps in the production of melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes that filters out harmful UV rays. It also plays a role in the development and function of the retina, a critical component of the eye.”

Dr Vaishnav advised that apart from incorporating above mentioned superfoods in your diet, it is crucial to limit the intake of processed and high-fat foods. These can increase the risk of developing high blood pressure or diabetes which can lead to glaucoma. “While there is no guaranteed way to prevent glaucoma, incorporating these superfoods into your diet can help in maintaining good eye health and reducing the risk of developing this sight-threatening disease. Along with regular eye check-ups and prescribed treatments, a healthy and balanced diet can go a long way in preserving your eyesight and improving your overall quality of life,” Dr Vaishnav said.
