Explaining to us if cataract can be prevented, Dr Sujatha said, “While we can’t always avoid cataracts, there are steps we can take to reduce the risk.” Since cataracts are age-related, you can follow the below precautionary tips listed by Dr Sujatha to protect your vision.
1. Limit Sun Exposure
Dr Sujatha advised to limit eyes’ exposure to the sun and recommended wearing sunglasses to block sun rays. She said, “Excessive exposure to sunlight, especially ultraviolet (UV) rays, can increase the risk of various eye problems such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and corneal damage.” It's essential to limit direct sunlight exposure, especially during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Sunglasses that offer UV protection (UV 400 or 100% UV protection) are highly recommended. These sunglasses can significantly reduce UV exposure and protect the delicate tissues in and around the eyes.

2. Avoid Physical Activities That May Cause Eye Injury
Dr Sujatha said, “Participating in sports or activities like basketball and football can expose your eyes to potential injuries such as blunt trauma, scratches, or foreign objects. Wearing appropriate protective eyewear, such as safety goggles or glasses designed for sports, can significantly reduce the risk of eye injuries.” These protective glasses should be impact-resistant and fitted properly to provide adequate coverage.
3. Quit Smoking
According to Dr Sujatha, smoking not only harms your overall health but also significantly increases the risk of developing cataracts. Cataracts cloud the lens of the eye, leading to blurred vision and eventual vision loss if untreated. Quitting smoking can reduce this risk and improve overall eye health.
