Exercise can be a healthy part of pregnancy when the pregnancy is uncomplicated and the activity is suitable for the individual. Walking, swimming, prenatal yoga and other moderate activities can support fitness and overall wellbeing. But pregnancy also changes how the body responds to physical exertion.
Some discomfort can be normal, while certain symptoms need immediate attention. The important question is not whether you feel tired during a workout, but whether your body is showing a warning sign that means you should stop.
7 Signs You Should Stop Exercising During Pregnancy
Dr Sadhna Singhal Vishnoi, Associate Director - Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, New Delhi explains, “Staying active during pregnancy is encouraged, but the body gives clear signals when it's time to pause. Recognising these early matters more than pushing through them.”
pregnancy warning signs
Some of the warning signs are mentioned below.
1. Vaginal Bleeding Or Fluid Leakage
Vaginal bleeding during or after exercise should not be treated as normal workout discomfort. The same applies to fluid leaking from the vagina. This could indicate rupture of the membranes and needs medical assessment.
Dr Vishnoi advises to stop exercising immediately and contact your maternity team or doctor. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) lists vaginal bleeding and fluid leakage among the warning signs for stopping exercise during pregnancy.
2. Dizziness, Lightheadedness Or Feeling Faint
Dr Vishnoi explains that feeling slightly tired after physical activity can be expected. Feeling dizzy, faint or unusually lightheaded is different. Pregnancy already changes blood circulation. Exercise can further affect blood pressure and blood flow.

Continuing to exercise when you feel faint also increases the risk of falling. Stop, sit or lie down safely and let your symptoms settle. If dizziness is severe, persistent or keeps happening during exercise, speak to your doctor.
ACOG specifically recommends stopping exercise when dizziness or faintness occurs.
3. Chest Pain Or Unusual Breathlessness
Getting mildly breathless during exercise can be normal, particularly as pregnancy progresses. But sudden or severe breathlessness is not something to exercise through.
Chest pain is another clear warning sign.
Seek medical attention if breathlessness is:
- Sudden or severe
- Present before you even start exercising
- Associated with chest pain
- Accompanied by dizziness or faintness
- Much worse than what you normally experience
These symptoms can have several causes and should not automatically be blamed on pregnancy or poor fitness.
4. Regular Or Painful Contractions During Exercise
The abdomen can occasionally tighten during pregnancy. However, regular, painful or increasingly frequent contractions are different. If contractions continue after stopping activity, become stronger or occur at regular intervals, contact your doctor or maternity unit.
Dr Vishnoi says, “This is particularly important before 37 weeks because regular contractions can be associated with preterm labour.” ACOG lists regular, painful uterine contractions as a reason to discontinue exercise.
Importantly, exercise itself has not been shown to routinely increase the risk of preterm birth in uncomplicated pregnancies. A 2023 J Clin Med review covering 57 studies found no association between moderate exercise during pregnancy and reduced gestational age. The researchers concluded that exercise was not associated with an increased risk of preterm delivery.
5. Reduced Or Absent Baby Movement
A baby's movement pattern becomes familiar to the mother as pregnancy progresses. If you notice a clear reduction or absence of your baby's usual movements during or after exercise, don't assume that the baby is simply resting because you worked out.
Stop exercising and pay attention to the movement pattern. If movements remain noticeably reduced, contact your maternity team promptly. This is not a situation where continuing exercise to see whether movement returns is advisable.
6. Severe Headache Or Sudden Swelling
A sudden, severe headache during exercise should not be dismissed as dehydration or fatigue.
It is particularly important when it occurs with:
- Sudden swelling of the face or hands
- Changes in vision
- Upper abdominal pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- High blood pressure
These can be warning signs of pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication that requires medical assessment.
So the message is not to avoid exercise. It is to recognise when a symptom needs medical attention.
7. Calf Pain Or Swelling In One Leg
Pain, swelling, warmth or tenderness in one calf is another symptom that should not be stretched or exercised through.
Pregnancy increases the risk of blood clots. A clot in a deep vein, known as deep vein thrombosis, can cause swelling and pain, usually in one leg.
If this occurs, stop exercising and seek urgent medical assessment. If calf symptoms occur together with sudden breathlessness, chest pain or coughing up blood, emergency medical attention is needed.

What Should You Do If A Warning Sign Appears?
According to Dr Vishnoi, the first step is simple: stop the workout. Do not try to finish the remaining five or 10 minutes because you are almost done.
pregnancy warning signs to stop
Instead:
- Stop the activity and sit or rest somewhere safe.
- Avoid continuing exercise until the symptom has been assessed if it is concerning.
- Contact your doctor or maternity team when appropriate.
- Seek urgent care for severe symptoms such as chest pain, severe breathlessness, heavy bleeding or reduced fetal movement.
There is no benefit in pushing through a symptom that could signal a pregnancy complication.
Who Should Be Extra Careful During Pregnancy Exercise?
Some women need a more individualised exercise plan.
This can include women with:
- A history of preterm labour
- Pregnancy complications
- Multiple pregnancy
- Heart or lung conditions
- Pregnancy-related hypertension
- Other medical conditions affecting pregnancy
Women who were inactive before pregnancy should also build up activity gradually rather than suddenly starting intense workouts. ACOG recommends a more gradual progression for women who were sedentary before pregnancy.
Recent evidence also shows why pregnancy exercise should not be treated as a one-size-fits-all prescription. A 2025 BJOG review examining the quality of trials found that many studies of antenatal physical activity had methodological limitations. When only the most rigorous trials were considered, the evidence for some pregnancy outcomes became less certain.
Does Feeling Tired Mean You Should Stop?
tired in pregnancy
Not necessarily. “Pregnancy can make a familiar workout feel harder. Mild fatigue or breathlessness that settles after slowing down or resting may not indicate a problem,” explains Dr Vishnoi.
The key is to notice a change from your normal response.
A workout that suddenly causes severe breathlessness, dizziness, pain or other unusual symptoms deserves more attention than ordinary tiredness after exercise.
How Can You Exercise More Safely During Pregnancy?
For an uncomplicated pregnancy, practical precautions include:
- Start gradually if you were previously inactive.
- Drink enough water before and during exercise.
- Avoid overheating.
- Adjust intensity as pregnancy progresses.
- Choose activities appropriate for your fitness level.
- Allow yourself enough recovery time.
- Avoid exercising through pain or warning symptoms.
ACOG also advises pregnant women to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat during exercise.

Conclusion
Exercise can be beneficial during pregnancy, but it should never become a test of how much discomfort you can tolerate. Bleeding, fluid leakage, dizziness, chest pain, unusual breathlessness, painful contractions, reduced baby movement, severe headache, sudden swelling and one-sided calf pain are symptoms that deserve attention. The goal is to stay active safely, not to push through warning signs. If something feels distinctly different from your usual pregnancy or workout response, stopping and checking with your doctor is safer than continuing.
FAQ
Can you exercise if you feel mild abdominal tightening during pregnancy?
Occasional, painless tightening can occur during pregnancy. However, if the tightening becomes regular, painful or increasingly frequent, stop exercising and contact your doctor or maternity team. How do you know if your pregnancy workout is too intense?
There is no single intensity level that suits every pregnant woman. If exercise causes severe breathlessness, dizziness, chest pain, bleeding, painful contractions or another warning symptom, stop. Your doctor can help determine an appropriate intensity based on your pregnancy and health.
