If you’re someone who cannot do without your earpods, whether on the metro trains or at your workplace, then this article is for you. EarPods have given us great comfort, from listening to music without having to disturb others to picking up or making calls at the click of a button. However, having them on for prolonged periods is said to have various risks.
Recently, a social media user, Prachi Patel, took to Instagram to share her experience with AirPods' noise cancellation feature, which uses suction to cancel surrounding noise. She reveals that due to overuse, the suction weakened the nerves of her middle ear (an air-filled cavity located between the eardrum and the inner ear), resulting in her losing 20% hearing in one ear and 35% in the other.
In light of such experiences, the OnlyMyHealth team interacted with Dr Girish Anand M S, Consultant - ENT Surgery, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, to understand how long is too long to wear EarPods.

What Happens When You Wear Your Earpods For Too Long?
Whether you wear your AirPods for long hours out of habit or by accident, the damage to your ears can be just the same.
"Continuous use may trap moisture and heat inside the ear canal, leading to irritation or a higher chance of ear infections. The pressure of EarPods can also cause pain, soreness, or discomfort in the outer ear," warned Dr Anand.
A review of 23 studies from around the world shows that regularly listening to loud music through earphones or headphones can raise the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, particularly in children and teenagers. These devices have become a big part of everyday life, but their long-term effect on hearing is still not fully understood.
Dr Anand explained that listening to music at a high volume for long periods can damage the tiny hearing cells inside the inner ear, which may lead to ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or hearing loss over time.
Additionally, prolonged use can also cause a buildup of earwax because the natural cleaning process of the ear is blocked. Taking breaks and keeping the volume low can help protect the ears.
How Long Is Too Long To Wear Earpods?
According to Dr Anand, using EarPods safely depends on both volume and time. “Experts suggest the ‘60/60 rule’, which means listening at no more than 60% of the maximum volume for not more than 60 minutes at a stretch,” he said. “After that, giving your ears a break helps prevent damage. In total, using EarPods for about 3 to 4 hours a day at a moderate volume is considered safe for most people.”

Is Noise Cancellation Safer Or Riskier?
Noise-cancelling EarPods can be safer than regular ones if used properly because they block outside noise, so people do not need to raise the volume too high. This helps protect the inner ear from loud sounds and reduces the risk of long-term hearing damage.
However, Dr Anand adds that they can also be riskier in some situations. “Since they cut off background sounds, users may not hear traffic, alarms, or someone calling, which can cause safety issues outdoors.”
Overall, noise-cancelling EarPods are safer for hearing, but they should be used carefully and with awareness of surroundings.
Eye Hygiene Tips To Follow
Good ear hygiene can help reduce the risks of using EarPods. These include:
- Cleaning EarPods regularly with a soft, dry cloth prevents dirt and bacteria from entering the ears.
- Avoid sharing EarPods with others, as this can spread germs.
- Give your ears breaks between use to allow airflow and prevent moisture buildup.
- Not putting cotton buds or sharp objects inside the ear canal, as this can push wax deeper or injure the ear.
Moreover, if you feel itching, pain, or discharge, it is better to see a doctor instead of trying home remedies. Keeping volume low, washing hands before touching EarPods, and storing them in a clean case also protect ear health.
Conclusion
EarPods have become an essential part of our daily lives, but like most conveniences, moderation is key. Following the 60/60 rule, keeping the volume low, and giving your ears regular breaks can go a long way in preventing long-term damage. Remember, your hearing is irreplaceable; use your EarPods wisely and listen responsibly.
