Earphones provide us with the privacy of our digital world, allowing us to enjoy digital media without disturbing others. Many of us are so accustomed to using earphones that we sometimes fall asleep with them on, especially those who can't do without their phones. While doing so occasionally is harmless, making it a habit may pose certain health risks, according to Dr Smita Nagaonkar, Consultant and Section Coordinator, ENT, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital.

Risk Of Ear Infections

“Wearing earphones for extended periods while sleeping can increase the risk of developing ear infections,” says Dr Nagaonkar. This is because of the accumulation of moisture in the ear due to prolonged earphone usage, which leads to the growth of bacteria or fungus in the ear canal, the doctor explains.

Another reason behind it is that earphones or earbuds can trap earwax in the ear canal, pushing it further up. This can, in turn, cause a buildup of earwax that could lead to an ear infection.

Research around whether or not wearing earphones or headphones can cause ear infections is mixed.

After examining the effects of headphone use on customer service representatives, a 2002 study published in the Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences found no link between headphone use and ear infections. In fact, the number of people with earwax buildup was similar to what's typically seen in the general population.

However, the study concluded that in individuals who already had chronic middle ear infections, prolonged headphone usage could cause increased itchiness and trigger the infection.

Long-Term Effects Of Wearing Earphones For Prolonged Periods

According to Dr Nagaonkar, the long-term side effects of sleeping with earphones may include hearing loss or damage.

She notes, "Listening to music at high volumes for prolonged periods can damage the delicate structures in the ear, leading to hearing problems over time. Furthermore, constantly having pressure on your ears while sleeping with earphones can cause discomfort and potentially contribute to issues like ear pain, tinnitus, or headaches."

"To avoid these complications and long-term side effects, it is recommended to remove your earphones before sleeping. If you prefer listening to music or white noise while falling asleep, consider using speakers at an appropriate volume instead of earphones to reduce the risks associated with wearing them during sleep," she advises.

How To Use Earphones Safely?

Loud noises can damage the tiny hair cells in your inner ear that help you hear.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, headphone usage can be one of the leading contributors, given that many headphones can reach volumes above 105 decibels (dB), which can cause hearing damage in just a few minutes.

Safe listening levels are generally considered below 70 dB.

Simplifying it further, Dr Nagaonkar recommends using earphones or headphones on less than 60% of the volume of the device connected to it for less than 60 minutes at a time.

She also encourages people to take breaks for 15–20 minutes in between.
