Many of us have been told, while growing up, that eating carrots improves our vision and keeps us away from glasses. While this crunchy orange vegetable is no doubt healthy, you may be wondering whether this belief that it boosts vision is backed by science or just a popular claim.
To uncover the truth about carrots and eye health, we interacted with Ms Chitra BK, Chief of Dietetics, KIMS Hospitals, Electronic City, Bengaluru and Dr Ashwin Santosh Shetty, Consultant in Ophthalmology at Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore. The medical expert separates facts from fiction.
Does Eating Carrots Really Improve Your Eyesight?
Dr Shetty says that carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. He adds that this vitamin is an essential nutrient that helps maintain healthy vision, especially in dim light, supports the cornea, and keeps the eyes properly lubricated. So does this imply that eating carrots can improve your vision? Let us see what the expert says.
Shedding light on this, the expert answers, “So eating enough carrots can help prevent vision problems caused by vitamin A deficiency, but they do not improve eyesight beyond normal levels. They also do not cure refractive errors such as near-sightedness or farsightedness, or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses if your vision problems are due to the shape of the eye rather than a lack of nutrients.”
Dr Shetty further explains, “If you already have healthy vitamin A levels, eating extra carrots will not make your vision sharper or improve your eye power. However, including them regularly as part of a balanced diet is still beneficial for overall health because they provide fibre, antioxidants, and other vitamins that support immunity and skin health; but consuming extremely large amounts of carrots over a long period may temporarily turn the skin yellow-orange, a harmless condition called carotenemia.”
Adding to this, MS Chitra says, "Carrots are known to be helpful in boosting eye health, and that is partly true; although they won’t miraculously enhance your vision. Carrots contain high amounts of beta-carotene, which the body then transforms into vitamin A, a crucial component in terms of retina health and low light vision. A lack of vitamin A causes night blindness and other serious complications that could have been easily avoided by simply having enough of the vitamin in your system. But if you’ve been getting enough of vitamin A all along, extra carrots are not going to help you see better or get rid of the glasses. There are certain vitamins and nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin (found in leafy greens), omega-3 fatty acids (fatty fish and walnuts), vitamins C, E, and zinc that play a role in eye health as well."

Other Benefits of Carrots
According to the Cleveland Clinic, here are some of the benefits of carrots:
- Supports heart health: As we all know, high cholesterol and heart disease go hand-in-hand. Studies show that the phenolic compounds in carrots may also help keep your cholesterol levels in a healthy range; thereby, keeping your heart healthy.
- Regulates blood sugar levels: Carrots contain fibre, which may help regulate your blood sugar. Studies show that the beta-carotene in carrots may help curb insulin resistance.
- Supports brain health: Carrots consist of lutein. This is one of the carotenoids known to boost eye health. According to research, this antioxidant also improves your brain health.
- Supports your immune system: Raw carrots is a rich source of vitamin A, which can help your body fight infections.
- Helps in weight management: It is said that 1/2 cup of carrots only has 41 calories. Therefore, eating them can keep you fuller longer and decrease your calorie intake as well.
- Helps with constipation: Carrot is rich in fibre, which can help keep your bowel movements regular.
Tips To Maintain Eye Health
Dr Shetty shares some tips to maintain good eye health:
- Choose an overall balanced diet rather than a single food. So along with carrots it is important to eat leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, eggs, fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, nuts, seeds, and colorful fruits and vegetables. All these provide nutrients such as lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc. They help protect the eyes from age-related damage and support long-term vision.
- Go for regular eye examinations.
- Use proper lighting when reading.
- Limit excessive screen time.
- Take breaks using the 20-20-20 rule.
- Wear sunglasses outdoors.
- Controlling diabetes and blood pressure, as they also play a major role in maintaining healthy eyesight.
"If anyone experiencing sudden vision changes, eye pain, flashes of light, or persistent blurred vision should seek prompt medical evaluation instead of relying on dietary changes alone," adds Dr Shetty.
"To keep your eyes healthy in the long run, you need to have a balanced diet with an array of nutrients. Lutein and zeaxanthin in spinach, kale, and other leafy vegetables will guard your eyes against the damage that can be caused by blue light and ageing. Omega-3 fatty acids in fish and walnuts will help improve your retina’s functioning and decrease the chances of developing dry eyes," concludes Ms Chitra.

Conclusion
To summarise, carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, which supports overall eye health. However, they do not have the magical ability to correct your vision or replace your glasses. To maintain good eyesight, opt for a well-rounded diet, reduce screen time, and go for regular eye check-ups. So, keep enjoying carrots as part of a balanced diet, but remember to seek medical help if you experience any sudden or persistent changes to your vision.
