Do you feel extremely hungry after coming home from work in the evening? Do you feel a strong urge to binge eat snacks after the sun goes down? If you can relate to these, then let us tell you that you are not alone. Many people struggle with extreme evening cravings daily. Our expert shares certain dietary mistakes that may be behind your hunger pangs in the evening.
To understand this better, we reached out to Ms Chitra BK, Chief of Dietetics, KIMS Hospitals, Electronic City, Bengaluru.
5 Diet Mistakes That May Be Cause Evening Cravings
Ms Chitra says that late-night cravings are very common. “But having cravings for food in the evening is sometimes related to your diet during the day. I usually observe patients who try to manage their evening cravings only through the elimination of snacks. However, the problem is usually more complex than that,” she adds. On this note, the expert lists some common dietary mistakes that may lead to evening cravings:
1. Not Eating Lunch or Eating an Unhealthy Lunch
Your lunch should contain protein, fibre, and healthy fats. If the lunch is not sufficient or unbalanced in these nutrients, one may have cravings in the evening.
2. Lack of Adequate Protein Consumption
Protein intake also helps you stay full for longer periods of time. In the case of carbohydrate-heavy meals, the feeling of hunger might come sooner. Choose foods such as dal, curd, paneer, tofu, eggs, fish, chicken or lentils, depending on your personal preferences.
3. Excessive Time Interval Between Meals
Extended intervals between meals might also lead to higher hunger levels and increased craving for tasty food. If dinner is hours away, it is possible to consume healthy snacks to avoid overeating.

4. Food Restriction During the Day
A very low-calorie diet and restrictive food pattern during the day might provoke cravings during the evenings. It is necessary to take into account that nutrition management requires proper intake of food.
5. Misinterpreting Thirst, Stress, or Boredom for Hunger
There are instances when one feels like eating not because of hunger. Other factors like stress, tiredness, lack of water intake, and the habit of eating snacks while watching television could cause one to feel the need to eat. One needs to stop before indulging and check if the body is indeed hungry.
“The aim is not to refrain from having snacks but to have them intentionally and in a healthy way. When hungry, pick snacks such as fruits with nuts, roasted chana, makhana, curd, or a vegetable sandwich, instead of relying on highly processed food,” concludes Ms Chitra.

Are Cravings Impacted By The Time of The Day?
A 2018 study, published in the Nutrition journal, attempts to understand whether cravings are affected by the time of the day. The research confirms that our internal clocks do indeed heavily impact when we feel hungry.
The study shows that our internal clock naturally causes our overall hunger and specific food cravings to peak in the late evening, usually around 8:00 PM. On the other hand, our urge to eat is naturally at its lowest in the early morning, generally around 8:00 AM, despite the fact that we have been fasting all night. The researchers believe this late-day spike in appetite is an evolutionary survival mechanism that has been inherited from our early ancestors. This is because in ancient times, a heightened evening appetite encouraged humans to eat larger meals and store energy as fat to survive unexpected periods of food scarcity.
This natural tendency to crave sweet, salty, and starchy foods at night often conflicts with our modern lifestyle today. This is because high-calorie food is now easily accessible. Moreover, we stay awake much later using artificial light. Therefore, evening cravings frequently lead to unnecessary overeating. Giving in to these cravings can be counterproductive for your health. This is because our bodies handle nutrients very differently depending on the hour. For example, our cells are highly sensitive to insulin in the morning; this means our body processes carbohydrates and sugars much more efficiently early in the day.

To deal with this, experts recommend eating a substantial breakfast and lunch to align with your body’s peak metabolic efficiency. The study concludes that recognising that your late-night cravings are just a natural biological quirk of your circadian rhythm can help you safely ignore them and build better eating habits.

Conclusion
Managing intense evening cravings needs addressing both your daytime dietary habits and your body’s natural clock. You can deal with this by eating balanced, protein-rich meals early in the day and avoiding extreme calorie restrictions. This way, you can align your nutrient intake with your peak metabolic efficiency. If genuine hunger pangs strike in the evenings, choose wholesome snacks such as roasted chana or fruit that can satisfy your appetite without compromising your long-term health.
