The only disease that has snatched the peace and happiness from humans is Coronavirus. It is been months but this lethal pandemic doesn’t seem to subside anytime soon. All the preventive measures are being taken by the people but the threat is still upon us. Every day, a new fact, a new theory, new research comes out bringing new information about this deadly autoimmune disease. After cough, cold, fever, diarrhea and respiratory issues, the newest sign to identify the COVID-19 infection is blue or purple lesions on the toes.
COVID Toes
Doctors have given the medical name ‘COVID Toes’ to this symptom which has become an important mark to identify the virus in a person. This is a common sign in asymptomatic patients as well as in some serious coronavirus-positive patients too. However, this is a sign of coronavirus or not is still needs to be validated.
Pain and burning sensation in the toes
Dr. Ebbing Lautenbach, Head of infectious disease at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, told a news website that they are usually painful to the touch and cause a burning sensation-like feeling.
More likely to be seen in children and adults
Lautenbach states that COVID toes are commonly spotted in children and adults who are either asymptomatic or may have resulted in negative in the tests earlier.

Seen in severe cases of corona
According to Susan Wilcox, Chief of Critical Care, Massachusetts General Hospital's emergency department, these symptoms are spotted in the severe cases of coronavirus. These visible changes in the feet are common with COVID-19 patients who have acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Possible reasons behind these lesions
According to Lautenbach, there are two possible explanations for COVID toes.
- First reason: An inflammatory response usually is caused due to any feet or toe infection in the person.
- Second reason: Blood clothing in the blood vessel of toes which caused the appearance of blue or purple color.
- But to conclude something, vast research is needed.

But it is not confirmed yet whether these are COVID toes and if they are caused due to coronavirus in the human body. Besides, health experts have also warned against these signs considering the seriousness of coronavirus and all the myths spread about COVID-19.
