Does Drinking Chia Seed Water On An Empty Stomach Help With Weight Loss?

Wondering if you should drink chia seed water on an empty stomach for weight loss? Discover how this viral morning drink impacts metabolism and fat burning.

Chia seed water is a popular drink that is currently dominating social media feeds. The main reason behind this is said to be its ability to help with weight loss. Drinking chia seed water daily on an empty stomach is believed to support weight loss. Is this the truth or just a viral fad? Today, this article will explain it to you.

To understand this better, we reached out to Ms Edwina Raj, Head of Services, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

Can Chia Seed Water Help With Weight Loss?

Ms Raj confirms that drinking chia seed water on an empty stomach may help with weight loss, but it is not a magic solution. “Chia seeds are rich in fibre, protein, and healthy fats, which can help you feel full for a longer time. When soaked in water, chia seeds absorb liquid and become gel-like. This can slow digestion and reduce hunger, making it easier to avoid overeating during the day,” she adds.

The expert continues, “One tablespoon of chia seeds contains a good amount of fibre. As we all know, fibre supports digestion, improves bowel movements, and may help control cravings for unhealthy snacks. Some people also feel more energetic and hydrated after drinking chia seed water regularly. This is because chia seeds expand in the stomach, and may naturally reduce appetite for a few hours.”

Tips to Drink Chia Seed Water The Right Way

Ms Raj says that if you want to add chia seeds water safely into your morning routine, follow these tips:

  • Soak 1–2 teaspoons in a glass of water for at least 20–30 minutes before drinking.
  • You can also add lemon for taste.
  • Drinking enough water throughout the day is important because chia seeds absorb a lot of liquid.
  • Eating too many dry chia seeds may cause bloating, gas, or stomach discomfort in some people.

Can Chia Seed Water Alone Help in Weight Loss?

Ms Raj clarifies that chia seed water alone will not cause major weight loss unless it is combined with healthy habits. “Weight loss mainly depends on eating fewer calories than your body burns. If someone drinks chia water but still eats excessive junk food, sugary drinks, or remains inactive, the effect will be very limited,” she adds.

The expert adds, “The best approach for healthy weight loss is combining chia seed water with balanced meals, daily walking or exercise, proper sleep, and reduced sugar intake. Think of chia seed water as a supportive health habit rather than a quick-fix weight loss remedy. Regular consistency and overall lifestyle matter much more than any single drink or food.”
