Shaking of hands and shivering of body post workout or any intense activity is common and is a natural reaction of the body. This has to do with various reasons that lead to this condition, most of the problems can be sought out with mere drinking of water or lifestyle changes. Today we will know about the reasons for shivering and shaking of hands post intense workout or activities.
Is it normal for people to have shaky hands after workout?
We consulted our expert physiotherapist Mr. Uttam Mishra, working for Sahara Hospital, Lucknow. He explained that most people who are in regular touch do not get shaky hands in most conditions. It is only when you have consumed more energy than your regular consumption or due to lack of nutrients present in your body, shaky hands occur. People who just start working out or have an extremely intensive day at work may get shaky hands as well. Let us know about each condition in detail.
What Are Causes for having Shaky and Shivering Hands?
1. Muscle Fatigue
This is a very common reason of having shaky hands and shivering after workout. This is because when the body is indulged in heavy workout activity, our central nervous system makes all the units that have motor functions fire. This means that they start working extensively and thus it builds more neuron fibre and muscle fibres. As you make your muscles work for long hours, it increases the tension and gradually the process slows down. It is the time where you feel exhausted.
Muscles having continuous process of contraction and relaxation makes the hands shaky and sometimes results to shivering. It is fine till your hands start shaking but shivering can be little threatening for your body functions. Hence it is advised to gradually increase your workout process and not put immediate pressure on muscles.

- Weakness in muscles
- Low energy levels in body
2. Holding of muscles in one particular position
If you try to hold your muscles in one particular position for very long, you may start having shaking and shivering hands. This is because of the simple reasons that motor neurons start getting exposed and try to make create more force because of which shivering occurs. You can experience this condition if you start doing planks and try to hold for longer than usual.
This is also because of the activity of motor neurons in the body. It will come back to normal as the functions and muscles get relaxed for some time. Motor units are only used for generating excess power in the muscles; pressure exerted at the same position does not allow motor nerves to be as effective resulting in this condition.

3. Low Blood Pressure
Low blood pressure is caused because of lack of glucose present in the body. Glucose is actually the main fuel which keeps the energy levels in the body high for putting up muscle activities. While working out, these glucose levels drop because of which you can have low blood pressure. This problem happens when you tend to perform or work for long hours continuously and exhaust your glucose levels in the body. It can be problematic in some cases when the blood pressure dips too low and causes heart problems

- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Fatigue
- Irritability
- Fast heartbeat
- Headache
- Weakness
4. Dehydration
Many people dehydrate themselves by not consuming enough liquid while doing intense activities. Staying hydrated while performing any physical workout is very important, lack of physical electrolyte balance in the body causes dehydration. This electrolyte imbalance occurs when there is not enough fluid or water left in the body to make use of to keep the temperature levels and functions at optimal levels.
Doing intense workouts can cause you to flow down a lot of water in form of sweat. This can result to shaking hands and shivering in the body. You must have glucose as early as possible and drink more water to make electrolyte balance again.

5. High Caffeine Intake
High amount of caffeine intake in the body also makes the body tremble and shiver more often. Many people have coffee, sports drinks and pre-workout drinks which contain high levels of caffeine. These drinks are meat to give you explosive power through the workout, but after some time, you can feel quite weak. High levels of caffeine intake affect your limbs and other body parts. It can cause a number of problems if consumed in excessive amount-
- Fast heartbeat
- Insomnia
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea
- Elevated blood pressure
