We spoke to Kushal Pal Singh, Fitness and Performance Expert, Anytime Fitness, Delhi, who explained the causes of gym injuries and how to prevent them.

1. Lifting Too Heavy, Too Soon

Why It Happens:

We’ve all seen it. Someone walks into the gym, stacks the weights, and tries to lift like they’ve been training for years. This is a recipe for disaster. Your muscles, joints, and tendons need time to adapt.

How to Avoid It:

"Progressive overload is the key. Begin light, get your form right, and progress with weights as you continue. Take your ego outside. Strength is not lifting the most. It never has been. It's about lifting smart," said Singh.

2. Poor Form and Technique

Why It Happens:

Poor posture, incorrect angles, and improper movement patterns place undue stress on muscles and joints. Over time, this leads to chronic pain or sudden injuries.

How to Avoid It:

"Learn the correct form first, weights second. Practice in front of a mirror or videotape yourself to check your posture. If you're not sure, ask a trainer. A small adjustment can save you from a big injury," advised Singh.

3. Skipping Warm-Ups and Cool-Downs

Most gym enthusiasts start training without warming up their bodies. Cold muscles are tight and tend to tear.

How to Avoid It:

Warm up with 5–10 minutes of dynamic stretches, mobility drills, or light cardio before working out. After a workout, cool down using static stretches. It avoids stiffness and promotes recovery.

4. Overtraining and Lack of Recovery

More does not always mean better. Overtraining exhausts your muscles compromises immunity, and raises the risk of injury.

How to Avoid It:

Listen to your body. Keep in mind that rest is part of the process. Sleep, hydration, and proper nutrition should also be prioritised to support recovery. Stick to a structured workout routine with rest days.

5. Using the Equipment incorrectly 

Why It Happens:

Not every machine or weight is one-size-fits-all. Incorrect settings, unstable weights, or improper grips can lead to muscle imbalances and injuries.

How to Avoid It:

"Adjust machines to fit your body mechanics before using them. You should use weights that you can manage during the movement. Also, wear appropriate footwear. Poor footwear results in poor posture which might lead to injuries," added Singh.

6. Ignoring Mobility and Flexibility

Training without mobility work is like driving a car with no fuel. Either it won't start or something will break down. Tight muscles restrict movement and lead to compensations that cause injuries.

How to Avoid It:

"Imbibe mobility drills in your warm-up. One excellent way is to include yoga or stretching sessions every week. Don't neglect core work. It keeps your movements stable and secure," added Singh.

7. Training Alone Without Guidance

Most people train alone and without guidance, making mistakes they don't even realise or aren't aware of.

How to Avoid It:

Become a member of a fitness club or group where certified trainers can correct your form and technique. Also, find a workout buddy. They keep you motivated and spot you during heavy lifts.
