Several beauty influencers have taken to social media platforms, claiming that rice water works wonders for hair growth. TikTokers are swearing by the benefits of this home-made solution, singing praises about how it helps them achieve smoother and shinier locks. To verify the same, we spoke to Dr Ramdas, Senior Dermatologist, Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar, Hyderabad.
Can Rice Water Help Your Hair Grow?
“The primary components of rice water that are believed to contribute to hair health include amino acids, vitamins, and minerals,” said Dr Ramdas.
He added, “Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, are crucial for hair structure, while vitamins and minerals support overall hair and scalp health.”

In addition, rice water may contribute to hair growth by improving the overall health of the scalp, reducing inflammation, and providing essential nutrients to the hair follicles, according to the doctor.
However, there isn’t much research to support the claim.
Rice itself is packed with nutrients, and rice water contains phenols, which are said to show "promising results" for alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that can lead to unpredictable hair loss, according to the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
Still, there are not many studies that suggest rice water boosts hair health.
How To Prepare The Rice Water Solution
Here’s how you can make rice water for hair growth:
- Thoroughly rinse ½ to 1 cup of rice, be it white, brown, or jasmine, to eliminate any impurities present.
- Following the rinsing stage, put the cleaned rice in 2–3 cups of water and allow it to soak for a duration of 15–30 minutes. This soaking period enables the water to absorb the beneficial components from the rice.
- Then, strain the rice, carefully collecting the infused water in a clean bowl.
Skin Benefits Of Rice Water
According to a 2002 study published in the journal Acta Dermatovenereologica, exposing your skin to rice-starch-containing water twice daily for 15 minutes helped improve the healing capacity of damaged skin by 20%.
Dr Ramdas said, “The vitamins and minerals in rice water may contribute to a brighter complexion by promoting skin cell regeneration.” It contains compounds with anti-inflammatory effects, which can be soothing for irritated skin conditions such as eczema or dermatitis, the doctor continued, adding, “Applying rice water to the skin can act as a natural moisturiser, helping to hydrate and soften the skin.
In addition, fermented rice water may also hold some benefits for your hair, as it is said to contain more antioxidants, which may help combat free radicals, potentially reducing the signs of premature ageing, such as wrinkles and fine lines, as per a study published in the journal Antioxidants.

- Regular scalp massages, which help stimulate blood circulation

- Avoid harsh chemical treatments, excessive heat styling, and tight hairstyles
- Use a mild shampoo and conditioner suitable for your hair type
- Drink adequate amount of water
Conclusion
While many people advocate the benefits of rice water for hair health, Dr Ramdas, while agreeing with some of the claims, recommended consulting with a dermatologist before indulging in such home remedies. Also, if you’re planning to reap the potential benefits of supplements such as biotin, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids for hair growth, it is again vital to speak with a professional.
