A hot water bath has numerous benefits, ranging from improved blood circulation and muscle relaxation to better sleep quality and stress reduction. Did you know that it can also help relieve period pain? This article will explain all you need to know about it.
To understand this better, we reached out to Dr Chetna Jain, Director Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Sector 14, Gurgaon.
Can a Hot Bath Relieve Period Pain?
Dr Jain says that many women find comfort in taking a hot bath during their periods, and there is good reason for this.
The expert explains, “Heat therapy is one of the most widely recommended non-medication approaches for managing menstrual cramps. A warm bath can help relax muscles, improve blood flow, and provide temporary relief from period pain.”
She continues, “Menstrual cramps occur when the uterus contracts to shed its lining. These contractions are triggered by hormone-like substances called prostaglandins. Higher levels of prostaglandins can lead to stronger uterine contractions and more intense pain. Applying heat to the abdomen or lower back may help relax the muscles involved and reduce the sensation of pain.”

How Hot Bath Helps Reduce Period Pain
Speaking about how a hot bath relieved period pain, Dr Jain says, “A hot bath provides heat to a larger area of the body than a heating pad. Warm water encourages blood vessels to dilate, improving circulation and helping muscles relax. This can ease cramping in the lower abdomen, pelvis, lower back, and even the thighs.”
The expert adds, “Another advantage of a hot bath is its ability to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Menstrual discomfort is often accompanied by fatigue, irritability, and emotional stress. Spending time in warm water can help calm the nervous system, reduce tension, and improve overall well-being.”
Dr Jain adds that some women find additional relief by adding epsom salt to their bath. “Epsom salt contains magnesium, which may help relax muscles. While scientific evidence is limited regarding absorption through the skin, many people report feeling more relaxed after an epsom salt bath,” she says.
Tips To Safely Take a Hot Bath For Period Pain Relief
Dr Jain shares some hacks to safely use a hot bath for period pain relief:
- The water should be warm rather than excessively hot. Extremely hot water can cause dizziness, dehydration, or skin irritation.
- A comfortable temperature that allows you to relax for 15–20 minutes is generally sufficient.
- Hydration is also important. Drinking water before and after a bath can help prevent dehydration, especially if the bath is warm.
- Gentle stretching after the bath may further reduce muscle tension and improve comfort.
- Although hot baths can be effective for many women, they may not completely eliminate severe menstrual cramps. Other helpful measures include regular physical activity, adequate sleep, hydration, anti-inflammatory foods; and, when needed, pain-relieving medications recommended by a healthcare provider.
“Women who experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, pain between periods, or symptoms that disrupt daily activities should consult a gynaecologist. Underlying conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, or adenomyosis may require specific treatment,” warns Dr Jain.
