Many of us like to start our day with a cup of coffee, but there is a common belief that this seemingly harmless habit may actually be dehydrating us. To separate fact from fiction, we interacted with clinical nutrition. This article uncovers the real science behind caffeine and your hydration levels.
Let us take a look at what Ms Edwina Raj, Head of Services, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, has to say about it.
Can Coffee Lead To Dehydration?
Ms Raj says that coffee is often believed to cause dehydration because caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, meaning it can increase urine production.
The expert explains, “However, for most healthy adults who drink coffee regularly, moderate coffee consumption does not usually lead to significant dehydration because the fluid in the coffee helps offset the small increase in urine output. Research shows that drinking moderate amounts of coffee contributes to daily fluid intake in a similar way to water and other beverages.”
She adds, “Problems may occur when people consume very large amounts of caffeine, drink coffee instead of water throughout the day, exercise heavily without replacing fluids, or live in hot climates where fluid needs are higher.”
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set a daily limit for total caffeine intake. The limit is 400 milligrams a day for adults.
Who Is More At Risk For Dehydration Caused By Coffee?
Ms Raj says that the risk of dehydration from coffee is generally low, but some people may be more sensitive to caffeine’s effects. “Signs of dehydration can include thirst, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, fatigue, dark-colored urine, and reduced urine output,” she adds.
Speaking about who are more likely to experience dehydration after drinking coffee, the expert says, “People who are not regular coffee drinkers may notice a stronger diuretic effect compared to those who consume caffeine frequently. Certain groups, such as older adults, individuals with kidney conditions, and those taking medications that affect fluid balance, may need to pay closer attention to their hydration status. Energy drinks and highly caffeinated coffee beverages can also contribute to excessive caffeine intake if consumed in large quantities.”

Tips To Prevent Dehydration Caused By Coffee
To prevent dehydration caused by coffee, Ms Raj shares the following tips:
- Enjoy coffee in moderation.
- Make sure to drink enough water throughout the day.
- A practical tip is to have a glass of water alongside your coffee, especially during hot weather, after exercise, or when consuming multiple cups.
- Pay attention to your body’s signals such as thirst and urine color.
- Aim for pale yellow urine as a general sign of good hydration.
- Maintaining a balanced intake of fluids from water, fruits, vegetables, soups, and other beverages can help support hydration, while allowing you to enjoy coffee as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Conclusion
To summarise, enjoying coffee in moderation may not cause dehydration. However, you need to maintain a balanced fluid intake and listen to your body's cues. You can simply pair your brew with a glass of water. This can help you safely savour your caffeine without compromising overall health.
