Post-Diwali, the air quality in many Indian cities dipped and entered the 'very poor' category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), out of 230, only three towns reported 'good' air on Monday, a day after the festival.
An Air Quality Index (AQI) between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51–100 'satisfactory', 101-200 'moderate', 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor', 401-450 'severe' and above 450 'severe plus'. As per the CPCB, Delhi is currently witnessing a 'severe' category AQI.
Amid such toxic air quality, it is important to avoid outdoor activities, wear good-quality masks, and invest in air purifiers if possible. Moreover, Dr Pradeep Srivastava, Ayurvedic Expert, Krishna's Herbal and Ayurveda, Jodhpur, in a chat with the OnlyMyHealth team, said, "There is a need to improve our overall immunity, for which Ayurveda is a perfect solution,” adding, “It is not surprising that the Ayurvedic herbs have the solution for the biggest menace we are facing right now: Pollution.” He listed a few herbs and remedies that can help maintain respiratory health.

Adusa Or Malabar Nut
Adusa, also known as Justicia adhatoda, is a medicinal plant used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to treat respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis. Dr Srivastava said, “It is one little known ayurvedic herb that helps manage pollution-related health problems, treating cough and shortness of breath.”
A 2021 study published in Respiratory Research found that certain active compounds present in Adusa or Malabar nuts could be used in the treatment of COVID-19.
Researchers said, "Treatment of Adhatoda vasica extract alters the cellular hypoxic (low oxygen) response and modulates the inflammation thrombosis (blood clotting) axis. It reduces lung injury, thrombosis and fibrosis (damage to lung tissue). Moreover, in-silico (computer simulation) and in vitro (in lab), analysis suggests it may be able to prevent Covid-19 infection and progression."
To reap its benefits, you can mix 30 millilitres of Adusa juice in 30 ml warm water and drink it on an empty stomach, half an hour post-dinner, explained the doctor.
Tulsi
Tulsi is another herb that benefits respiratory health. A study published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine suggests that tulsi can also boost overall immunity and keep infections, such as Tuberculosis (TB), pneumonias, and other illnesses at bay.
It is endowed with powerful anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, offering several respiratory system benefits. It is said to alleviate symptoms associated with respiratory conditions like coughs, colds, and asthma. In addition, tulsi aids in decongestion and airway soothing, leading to improved breathing.
Mulethi And Turmeric
Dr Srivastava said, “With its anti-inflammatory properties and being immunity boosters, mulethi (or licorice) and turmeric are the right solution for pollution related symptoms.”
According to a study published in the Journal Acta Pharmacologica Sinica, a compound called glycyrrhizin found in licorice root has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, and anti-viral properties that could help in the treatment of asthma, a chronic lung disease caused by inflammation in the airways.
On the other hand, turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and expectorant properties, beneficial for supporting lung function.
Dr Srivastava believes that incorporating one or all of these ingredients in your daily routine, alternating different herbs each day, can help people stay healthier and prevent them from the ill-effects of the pollution.

Other Alternatives
Apart from using Ayurvedic herbs to promote lung health, you can also try other natural alternatives.
Dr Srivastava recommended indulging in Panchakarma therapies like Nasya therapy and Vaman therapy, which involves administering herbal medication through nose and controlled, medically-induced vomiting, respectively. According to the doctor, it is integral to practise these therapies under certified Ayurvedic practitioners.
In addition, practising yoga asanas like Pranayam or mindful breathing is another great way to cleanse and strengthen your lungs, thus helping you to breathe better, the doctor added.
Conclusion
Ayurveda is an age-old medicinal system that helps relieve several ailments. As pollution levels continue to rise and worsen, incorporating Ayurvedic herbs such as Malabar nut, mulethi, and turmeric can prove beneficial for the respiratory system. However, it is important to take other necessary precautions to protect your lungs, like wearing masks, avoiding outdoor activities, and more.
