Talking to the Onlymyhealth team, Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, said, “Certain ayurvedic herbs are revered for their cooling properties and ability to help the body withstand the summer heat.” He shared five Ayurvedic herbs that can effectively combat heat exhaustion and keep you feeling refreshed and energised during hot weather.

Amla

“Amla, also known as Indian Gooseberry, is a powerhouse of Vitamin C and antioxidants. Its cooling nature helps in reducing body heat and enhancing immunity,” said Dr Chaudhary. He recommended, “You can consume fresh amla juice or include dried amla powder in your diet to experience its rejuvenating benefits.”

Additionally, a Japanese study found that amla also supports digestion, which can be particularly beneficial during the summer months when digestive issues are common.

Mint

Mint is a well-known herb for its cooling and refreshing properties. “It contains menthol, which provides instant relief from heat-related discomforts like headaches and nausea,” said Dr Chaudhary. He recommended that preparing a soothing mint tea by steeping fresh mint leaves in hot water or adding mint leaves to salads and drinks for a cooling twist. 

Mint also aids digestion and promotes a sense of calmness, according to a study published in the Journal of Pain Research.

Coriander

Coriander is not just a flavourful herb but also a cooling one. Dr Chaudhary said, “Its seeds and leaves have a cooling effect on the body, making it a valuable ally against heat exhaustion. Coriander seeds can be soaked overnight and consumed in the morning to cool the body internally.”

Fennel

Fennel tea is another refreshing option to stay cool and hydrated during hot days. Fennel seeds are known for their cooling and digestive benefits. “They help in reducing body heat and alleviating symptoms like bloating and indigestion. Chewing on a few fennel seeds after meals can aid digestion and prevent heat-related discomforts,” said Dr Chaudhary. 

Sandalwood

Sandalwood is a prized herb in Ayurveda for its cooling and soothing properties, according to Dr Chaudhary, especially for the skin. “Applying sandalwood paste on the body can help in reducing body heat and relieving heat rashes and irritation,” said Dr Chaudhary. You can also add a few drops of sandalwood essential oil to your bathwater for a relaxing and cooling experience, he recommended.
