Whether you visit a bar, a restaurant, or a cafe, a drink is a must. During celebrations, alcoholic beverages are a common preference. However, excessive drinking can be harmful to your health. In fact, a 2023 report by the World Health Organization (WHO) even said that no level of alcohol consumption is safe for health.

So, what if we switch to mocktails? Since they are non-alcoholic drinks, can they be a healthier alternative, and is it okay to consume them regularly? We asked an expert.

Are Mocktails Healthy?

Mocktails are non-alcoholic beverages that are considered a substitute for all the fun and flavour provided by alcoholic beverages or cocktails. They're often made with a combination of juices, sodas, syrups, herbs, and spices, which helps create a refreshing and interesting mood.

Since they contain zero alcohol, they’re healthier than most alcoholic drinks. However, Veena V, Dietitian, Aster Women and Children Hospital, Whitefield, Bengaluru, says that mocktails, although non-alcoholic, may not always be healthy.

In fact, whether or not a mocktail is healthy depends on what it contains, she tells the OnlyMyHealth team.

According to her, this is mainly because of the heavy sugar content in most cocktails and mocktails. Many recipes contain lots of sugar, syrups, and fruit preservatives to make them sweeter, which in turn increase the calorie count, leading to health issues such as weight gain, diabetes, and dental problems.

As per the American Heart Association (AHA), the body does not require any amount of added sugar to function effectively.

"Added sugars contribute additional calories and zero nutrients to food," the health body highlights.

Therefore, Veena suggests preparing these drinks either using natural sweeteners or consuming them by reducing the amount of added sugar in them.

Veena notes that regularly consuming mocktails, especially those high in added sugars, can contribute to several health issues, including obesity, an increased risk of diabetes, and dental problems. Even mocktails made with natural ingredients can add up in calories if consumed in large quantities, she says, recommending moderate intake and being mindful of the ingredients.

How To Prepare Healthier Mocktails?

For a healthier mocktail, the dietitian recommends using fresh ingredients like fruits, herbs, and greens.

If possible, avoid or reduce any additional sugars or syrups; instead, use less honey or agave, which are more natural sweeteners, she adds. Moreover, you can add sparkling water or natural juices instead of sugary mixers.

Most importantly, it’s important to control your portions so that you don’t end up taking too many calories and sugars altogether, the expert notes.
