According to the World Health Organization, obesity is a complicated long-term condition characterised by an accumulation of fat that can negatively impact health. It elevates the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease, affects bone health and reproductive functions, and raises the risk of specific types of cancer.

  • High-Calorie Density: Oils are very caloric substances with nine calories in every gram, resulting in fat storage when consumed in excess.
  • Low Satiety: Fatty foods are low in fibre, leading to continued eating and no lasting feeling of fullness.
  • Unhealthy Fats: Trans and saturated fats in fried and processed foods can also lead to weight gain and other metabolic problems.
  • Slowed Metabolism: Excess unhealthy oils may lower metabolism and cause insulin resistance.
  • Hidden Oils: Many packaged and processed foods contain hidden oils, adding extra calories without consumers' awareness. Items like sauces, dressings, and snacks often have significant oil content, leading to unintentional overconsumption of fats and calories.

  • Choose Healthier Oils: Opt for oils with beneficial fat profiles. For instance, extra virgin olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats and has heart-protective properties. Mustard oil, traditionally used in many Indian households, has been associated with a lower prevalence of overweight and obesity, according to a 2020 study
  • Mindful Cooking Practices: Avoid reusing cooking oil, as it can increase trans-fat content, posing health risks.
  • Be Cautious with Processed Foods: Read labels to identify hidden oils and opt for whole, unprocessed foods when possible.
