Night blindness is a common problem which occurs in various people of different age groups. Even through this condition is more prominent in elderly people; many other causes can result to night blindness at a young age as well. Night blindness is a vision impairment condition in which a person is unable to look at objects clearly in the night. The impairment of vision is different from everyone and thus sometimes treatment options also differ. Today we will look at some natural ways through which we can reduce night blindness. We will also know about some dietary supplements which can prevent night blindness as well.

Alternative Ways To Reduce Affect Of Night Blindness

1. Wearing red-tinted glasses

This is a common remedy which is practised by various people and also complimented by eye experts. Wearing red-tinted glasses helps the eyes to focus in a better manner. These types of glasses reduce pressure from the eyes during night and can be adjusted for better vision. This works on the example where you can apply light on the tinted glazed paper which can increase the sharpness of the buttons or what is present on the sheet or map.

2. Avoid looking directly at a night source

Looking at the night source directly can affect your pupils and create more pressure on them which can worsen the condition for night blindness. Therefore it is best not to look directly at a light source even if it does look powerful enough. 

It may be possible at times that you may not be able to avoid light source especially in the case of driving etc. in that case, try to avoid the light or close one eye until the source passes. High beams can affect your night vision adversely and decrease the health of lens inside the eyes. If you have night blindness and still face direct light sources multiple times, it can even cause permanent vision impairment.

3. Keep your eyes in motion

Try to focus at different points after a time interval. Looking at one particular place or in one direction can increase the chances of night blindness. Even it increases the risk of having cataract which causes night blindness. Keeping your eyes in motion, looking in different direction and blinking your eyes often can increase the recovery of your eyes and also decrease problem of night blindness. 

Looking at different sources makes the eye adapt to different lighting conditions which is a type of eye exercise and helps to improve eye function. Scan different areas and surrounding around you, try to look at darker object, keep blinking and avoid hard light source.

4. Give time for your eyes to adjust naturally

Sometimes eyes can improve their health by their own. If you are at initial stage of night blindness, where you have started facing blurred vision, try to adapt to darkness and dark nights. This will make your eyes comfortable to darkness and may prevent you from falling for serious eye disorders. You can do an exercise by sitting in a dark room for 20-30 minutes on a daily basis for your eyes to adjust to darkness or just wear a sleep mask which covers your eyes.

5. Try eye massage 

Eye massage is a very powerful tool to improve your eye health; however this can only be done by professions. You should not try to massage your eyes yourself as it may damage your eye lens and cause further eye problem and redness. Eye massage needs to be done in a particular manner and technique in order to be effective. To do eye massage-

  1. Put slight pressure on both your eyes together with your palms
  2. Now keep that pressure balances for around 5-10 seconds.
  3. You will notice your vision to turn white instead of black for a slight moment
  4. When the black vision comes back, open your eyes

This will significantly improve your vision in the dark and regular eye massage can even prevent night blindness from happening.

6. Vitamin A

One of the major causes of having night blindness is because of lack of vitamin A supplements in the body. Vitamin A has a compound named rhodopsin which absorbs light in the retina. This compound is crucial for maintaining health of the eyes. Vitamin A supplements can actually improve the condition of night blindness and having it regularly in your diet can prevent your from having this vision impairment as well. 

You can get vitamin A from the following food sources-

  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Fish
  • Fortified cereals
  • Cantaloupe
