Dr Siddhant Bhargava, Nutritionist and Co-founder of InnerGize, Mumbai, is clear in his message as he says, “Fruit juices are poisoning you. If you think these are all healthy, then wait, I'll break your illusion. This is nothing but colourful sugar water.” He says that while fruits themselves are healthy and full of vitamins and minerals, fruit juices are not the same.
Dr Bhargava explains, “Fruits have a lot of sugar. But Mother Earth added fibre to fruits. Fibre stops the sugar from rapidly absorbing into the bloodstream. It stops the insulin spike and keeps the fruits healthy.” When we eat whole fruits, the fibre helps slow down sugar absorption, which is good for our bodies.
However, when fruits are turned into juice, the fibre is removed. Dr Bhargava says, “What did humans do? They grind the fruits. Now, the juice is gone, but the fibre is different. The heat that increased during juicing, the vitamins and minerals to be lost. And only sugar water is left, which has created a lot in the market.” He warns that what we are left with is mostly sugar water, not a healthy drink. His advice is simple: “The next time you feel like drinking juice, don't take this, but take the direct fruits instead.” Eating whole fruits is much healthier than drinking fruit juice.

Research supports Dr Bhargava’s warning. A study published in The BMJ found that drinking fruit juice is linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The study explains that fruit juices, even those labelled as “100% juice,” can cause blood sugar spikes because they lack fibre. In contrast, eating whole fruits is linked to a lower risk of diabetes.
