Akums has been awarded the title of 'Game Changers in Disease Diagnosis' at the 5th Healthcare Heroes Award event, organized by Only My Health and conceptualized by Jagran New Media. The award was presented by the Honorable Health Minister of Delhi, Sri Pankaj Kumar Singh, who also oversees the Transport and Information Technology ministries. A senior team member from Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Limited accepted the award on behalf of the company. It was a moment of great pride for the entire team as their groundbreaking development, Hydroxyurea, was also honored with the Editor's Choice Award.
Hydroxyurea: Medicine That Made Them Win
Hydroxyurea is a pioneering, indigenous medicine developed by Akums' R&D team, specifically for Sickle Cell Anemia. This genetic blood disorder causes red blood cells to become rigid and sickle-shaped, leading to pain crises, anemia, and potential organ damage.
Prior to this local innovation, the international counterpart of the drug was extremely expensive, costing around INR 77,000 for 100 ml and requiring freezing temperatures to maintain its effectiveness. In contrast, Akums' indigenous Hydroxyurea is priced under INR 1,000 for 100 ml and remains stable at room temperature, making it an affordable and accessible option for Sickle Cell.
