Healthy Snacking: Why You Should Choose 100% Natural Sweeteners For Your Kids

It might be difficult to refrain your children from eating sweets, but avoiding artificial sweeteners is always possible. These sweeteners are entirely chemically produced and are linked to a variety of health problems. To avoid this, you should replace them with 100% natural sweeteners, which are minimally processed and offer a healthier alternative. We spoke to Dr Swathi, Head of Research and Product Development, Herby Angel, who explained the importance of choosing natural sweeteners for your child's snacks.

Sugar can be defined as any sweet-tasting carbohydrate and is found naturally in various foods. This may include fruits, which contain glucose and fructose. According to a 2019 study, natural sweeteners consist of natural sugars, sugar alcohols, certain plant compounds, and some amino acids and polyphenols. “On the other hand, processed foods often contain modified sugars like high fructose corn syrup. Glucose, fructose, and sucrose are all different types of sugar and are processed by the body in various ways,” said Swathi.

There are other sweeteners available in the market known as artificial sweeteners. They are entirely chemically produced and are linked to health conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Children are at risk of suffering its harmful health effects. Some common artificial sweeteners include acesulfame-K, aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose.

Why Choose 100% Natural Sweeteners for Your Kids' Snacks?

Here are some reasons why opting for 100% natural sweeteners is a must, as listed by the expert:

Free From Harmful Chemicals and Additives

Did you know chemical compounds, such as sulphur dioxide, phosphoric acid, and bleaching agents are frequently used in the intensive processing of refined sugars? “In tiny doses, these additives might not be dangerous, but prolonged exposure can cause problems. Since natural sweeteners are minimally processed, they retain their integrity, providing your child with fewer artificial ingredients,” added Dr Swathi.

Gentle Impact on Blood Sugar Levels

Sugar spikes can cause hyperactivity, mood swings, and crashes in children, who are particularly vulnerable to them. On the other hand, natural sweeteners like agave syrup and coconut sugar have a lower glycaemic index and release energy more gradually. This helps to keep your child’s energy steady throughout the day and maintain balanced blood sugar levels.

Lowers the Chance of Chronic Health Problems

diabetes

Childhood sugar intake is associated with long-term health problems, such as dental decay, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. According to a 2019 study, Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are major sources of extra calories and have gained attention for their role in the development of chronic diseases. In children, consuming SSBs is linked to negative health effects. Hence, it becomes important to lower the total amount of sugar in your child's diet. This can be done by replacing artificial sweeteners with natural sugar.

  • Jaggery: It is made from cane or palm and contains minerals, such as iron, calcium, and phosphorus. It is also a good source of B vitamins and serves as a great natural sweetener, particularly for desserts.

  • Raw Honey: This is a superfood that naturally provides the necessary sweetness and is also beneficial. Iron, calcium, zinc, and potassium are among the minerals that are present in trace levels.

  • Dates: They contain vitamin B6 and iron. When consumed, dates can help make protein, lipids, and carbohydrates easier to digest. You can make a date puree by soaking the dates in warm water and blending them.

Bottomline

Dr Swathi concluded, “Choosing 100% natural sweeteners for your children's snacks is an investment in their long-term health, not merely a fad. You avoid health problems linked to sugar, give vital nutrients, and promote better eating practices by choosing natural substitutes. “
