Delhi-NCR is grappling with dangerously poor air quality as winter sets in, shrouding the region in a thick blanket of smog. With pollution levels skyrocketing, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has frequently reached the "severe plus" category, posing significant health risks to residents. Prolonged exposure to such toxic air can lead to respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, and long-term health complications. Hence, wearing the right mask is essential to protect yourself from harmful pollutants like PM2.5 and PM10 particles.
In the rush to shield yourself from pollution, selecting the right mask can be overwhelming with so many options available. We asked our expert Dr Shrey Kumar Srivastav, Senior Consultant and Physician, Sharda Hospital, - Noida, to simplify your choices and help you find the most effective mask for staying protected during this pollution crisis. Here is what he shared with us.
1. N95 Masks
N95 masks are one of the best options for protecting yourself against fine particulate matter. These masks helps in the following:
- Filter out at least 95% of airborne particles, including PM2.5 and PM10
- Provide a snug fit, minimising air leaks
- Are lightweight and comfortable for daily use
Adding to that Dr Srivastav emphasised, “Ensure the N95 mask you choose is certified and fits securely over your nose and mouth. Avoid counterfeit masks, which may not provide adequate filtration.”

2. N99 Masks
For areas with extremely high AQI, N99 masks offer even better protection, filtering 99% of airborne particles. These masks are ideal for individuals with respiratory conditions or those spending extended periods outdoors. However, they may be slightly more expensive and less breathable than N95 masks but a considerable option if you fall in that category.
3. Reusable Masks with Replaceable Filters
Reusable masks equipped with replaceable PM2.5 filters are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option. Look for masks with multiple layers, including activated carbon filters, which can help absorb harmful gases like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. Ensure the mask fits snugly and replace the filters as recommended.
4. Surgical Masks
Surgical masks, while widely available, offer minimal protection against fine particulate matter. They may block larger dust particles but are ineffective against PM2.5 and toxic gases. Use them only as a last resort or layer them over another mask for added coverage.
This thus makes N95 masks the top choice for combating severe pollution. They are reliable in terms of filtration, snug fit, and provide effective protection against the current harmful airborne particles.

Bottomline
In Delhi NCR's severe pollution, choosing the right mask is crucial for protecting your health. N95 or N99 masks provide the best defence against harmful pollutants, while reusable masks with replaceable filters offer a sustainable alternative. Avoid relying on cloth or surgical masks in hazardous conditions. Stay informed and take necessary measures to safeguard your well-being and breathe a little easier amidst the smog.
