Mouth ulcers are often caused by minor irritations, such as accidentally biting your inner cheek, stress, eating spicy food, not having enough vitamins, or irregular bowel movements and are usually not a serious medical condition. Most ulcers heal in about a week or two. However, if it sticks around for more than two weeks, keeps coming back, or shows up with other symptoms, it could be a sign of a major health issue that needs attention.
In an exclusive interaction with the editorial team of Onlymyhealth, Dr Tushar Tayal, Associate Director, Internal Medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, explained that one of the most important warning signs of mouth ulcers is delayed healing. “A sore that does not improve after two weeks should not be ignored, as persistent ulcers can sometimes be linked to infections, immune disorders, or even oral cancer,” he shared.
Causes of Mouth Ulcer
According to the Cleveland Clinic, if you get ulcers frequently or they hurt really badly, it could be a sign that you're not getting enough of certain nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, or folate in your diet, or your body isn't absorbing them. As cited in the Mayo Clinic, sometimes these ulcers can be linked to other health issues, such as celiac disease or Crohn's disease, which can affect how your body absorbs the nutrients it needs.

Red Flag Symptoms to Watch For
Dr Tayal emphasises that some signs can be a warning that something more serious is going on with your mouth or overall health, and you should get medical help right away. He suggests paying attention to any other symptoms that show up with the ulcer. These may include:
- Fever
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Difficulty swallowing
- Red or white patches in the mouth
- Unexplained weight loss
The location and appearance of the ulcer also matter. Mouth ulcers that develop on the tongue, gums, or roof of the mouth, have a hard edge, bleed easily, or grow larger over time are not considered typical and should be checked by a healthcare professional.
Lifestyle Risk Factors of Mouth Ulcers
If you smoke, chew tobacco, or drink a lot of alcohol, you need to be extra careful. These habits can increase your chances of getting oral cancer and also make it harder for your mouth to heal if you do get sick.
Conclusion
Most of the time, mouth ulcers are not a big deal, but if you have one that won't go away, gets worse, or keeps coming back, that's not normal. Getting it evaluated early can help identify the cause and rule out serious conditions before they progress.
