What Is The ‘Sandwich Method’ In Skincare? Here’s How It Helps In Hydration

New skincare trends take over the world every now and then. One such method which is widely followed and appreciated is the ‘sandwich’ skincare technique. It is a method which involves layering of moisturizers and serums. The sandwiching method has a plethora of benefits. Want to know all about it? Read on.

In an exclusive conversation with the editorial team of Only My Health, Dr Vaaruni Ravishankar, Consultant Dermatology, MGM Healthcare, Chennai, shares her insights on this topic.

What is The Skincare Sandwich Method?

Let us begin by understanding what the skincare sandwich method is. “The skincare sandwich technique involves layering 'actives' in between different textures of moisturisers or emollients. This helps deliver the therapeutic agents to the skin, in a way that it is absorbed well, while reducing the irritation on the skin,” says Dr Ravishankar.

The expert adds that this method is best suited to individuals with sensitive skin, have a history of damaged skin or skin allergies, and ageing skin. “It is also best for individuals who are embarking on their skincare journey for the first time,” shares Dr Ravishankar.

Skincare Sandwich and Hydration

We are all aware that skin hydration is a key component in skincare. It refers to keeping the right ratio of water to protein in the skin. Dehydrated skin feels tight and scratchy and shows signs of ageing more visibly. On the other hand, well-hydrated skin looks plump, smooth, and radiant. The skincare sandwich method is believed to help achieve this goal.

“The method does not actively promote hydration but instead reduces irritation, inflammation and dehydration of the skin. This indirectly provides the benefit of hydration,” explains Dr Ravishankar.

How to Create a Skincare Sandwich

You can add the sandwich technique into your skincare routine with some simple steps. First, start with a clean face and then incorporate the following steps:

1. The first layer should be a hydrating base – Start with a lightweight, hydrating product like a toner, essence, or a light moisturiser. This will prepare your skin and add an initial layer of moisture.

2. The second layer are active ingredients – Apply your serums or treatments consisting of active ingredients like hyaluronic acid, retinoids, or vitamin C. These products will target your specific skin concerns.

3. The third and last layer should be a moisturizer – Finish off with a heavier moisturizer or an oil-based product to lock in all the previous layers. This will lock in moisture and increase the effectiveness of the active ingredients.

Dr Ravishankar summarises the method for us. She says: “First apply a thin layer of a light textured, water-based moisturizer or serum, followed by a skin serum which contains the therapeutic agents like retinol, adapalene, AHA, and then seal it all in with a thicker heavier moisturizer.”

Benefits of Skincare Sandwiching

Talking about the method’s pros, Dr Ravishankar says: “The skincare sandwiching method reduces skin irritation, builds better tolerance and better compliance to products. It gives a slow but gradual benefit to the skin,”

On this note, here are some benefits of sandwich skincare method:

  • Prevents Dehydration.
  • Improves Skin Texture.
  • Anti-Ageing.
  • Enhances Absorption.
  • Improves barrier health.
