We all know the pain and discomfort caused due to constipation. It can affect people of all ages and becomes even more difficult to manage in children. It can be frustrating for both parents and the child as it hampers daily activities. Therefore, it becomes important to address this health condition early on to prevent further complications.

Tips To Relief Chronic Constipation 

Increase Fiber Intake

You should increase the fibre intake of your child as it can help add bulk to their stool, making it easier to pass. It can be quite challenging to teach your child to eat healthy foods, but it is important to add fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains to their diet. You can do this by offering them fibre-rich foods in small portions throughout the day.

Encourage Them To Drink Fluids

Another factor that causes constipation in children is dehydration. Dehydration can lead to constipation. Hence, you should encourage your child to drink enough fluids as it helps maintain good bowel movements. You can serve them fruit juices, smoothies, and soups. Make sure your child brings a water bottle to school and has access to water all day. 

Add Probiotics To Their Diet

You should also add probiotics, like yoghurt and buttermilk, as they can help improve digestion and relieve constipation. You should consult your paediatrician before giving them probiotics, to avoid any health complications arising due to these supplements.

Encourage Physical Activity

You should also make sure that your child engages in physical activity, as it enhances their digestion and encourages bowel movements. Your kid can exercise by going for a run, riding a bike, swimming, or playing outdoor sports. If your children are not interested in sports, you should urge them to take the stairs, walk, or cycle to school.

Establish a Regular Toilet Routine

Instilling a regular toilet habit in kids can aid in preventing constipation. Encourage your child to go to the toilet every day at the same time, ideally after eating. Your child can unwind and pass stools more easily if the bathroom is calm and serene.

Avoid Certain Foods

Your child should avoid certain foods or eat in moderation as they can make constipation worse. This includes processed foods, fried meals, dairy products, and sugary foods. You can replace these foods with healthier alternatives such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

Don't Ignore the Urge to Go

Constipation can result from the tendency of many kids to hold in their stools. Therefore, encourage your child to go to the toilet whenever the urge strikes. The stool that has been held for too long may harden, making it uncomfortable and difficult to pass. If your child is uncomfortable using public toilets, you can teach them to use toilet seat covers or carry a small bottle of hand sanitiser.

It's crucial to seek medical help if your child's constipation persists for a long time and the condition worsens. An underlying ailment like hypothyroidism, celiac disease, or inflammatory bowel disease may manifest as chronic constipation. A paediatrician can identify the underlying issue and recommend the best course of treatment.
