To cope with the hustle of modern life, many choose to sacrifice sleep. Ignoring its importance, it’s at times seen as a period of inactivity, the time that could be devoted to something ‘productive’. The truth is, just like food and physical activity, you need sleep to function properly. It is the time when your body gets repaired, your mind rewind, and energy levels get that much-needed boost that keeps you energetic throughout the day. Not just that, it is also crucial for heart health. Yes, catching up on sleep is beneficial for your heart. Let us see how.

Lack Of Sleep & Related Health Issues

Although the number of hours one should sleep differs throughout his/her lifetime, experts recommend adults must sleep for at least 7 hours. Although getting sleep less than that once in a while isn’t that bad, if prolonged can cause serious health issues and aggravate the existing ones, says the US Centers For Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). Lack of sleep is associated with several serious health issues, such as depression, asthma, and even heart attack.

The health issues associated with a lack of sleep have a direct impact on your heart health and can make you susceptible to heart attack, heart disease, and stroke, according to the US CDC. Let us take a look at these health issues, one by one:

1. High Blood Pressure

When you sleep, your blood pressure climbs down. However, when you are unable to sleep, your blood pressure remains high, which in turn is associated with heart disease and stroke.

2. Type-2 Diabetes

Type-2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease is characterized by high sugar levels in the bloodstream, which if left unmanaged can cause cardiovascular diseases, kidney ailments, and blindness. Good sleep quality has been shown to improve blood sugar control.

3. Obesity

Lack of sleep leads to unhealthy weight gain. It alleviates stress levels that have an impact on weight. Also, when you do not sleep well, it impacts your hunger level, making you eat more and generally unhealthy and sugary foods. Obesity is another risk factor for heart diseases.

Sleep Problems Associated With Heart Health

There are sleep-related ailments that have an impact on heart health:

1. Sleep Apnea

While suffering from sleep apnea, you stop breathing multiple times when asleep. It has an impact on the oxygen level in blood. It increases your risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke, as per the US CDC.

2. Insomnia

It is a serious sleep-related disorder in which you have trouble falling asleep or remaining asleep. Insomnia has been linked to both high blood pressure and heart diseases.

Hence, to prevent these downsides, you must take steps to improve the quality of sleep. There are multiple ways you can do it. Have a sleep schedule, which means sleep and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Avoid having caffeine, which is a stimulant, and heavy food close to your bedtime. Limit your screentime at least 2-3 hours before going to bed. And make your room dark and cool for better sleep. These are some tips that can help you with a good night’s sleep.
