How Hydrated Are You? The Colour Of Your Urine Can Tell

There are several ways your body signals dehydration. Symptoms often include dizziness, headache, fatigue, diarrhoea, dry mouth and more. But did you know the colour of your urine can also reveal how hydrated you are? Speaking with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Rajesh Bendre, Chief of Lab, Neuberg Diagnostics, Mumbai, explains what the colour of your urine can tell about your health and hydration levels.

What Does The Colour Of Urine Reveal About Your Hydration Levels

Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than it takes in, often due to inadequate fluid intake, excessive sweating from heat or physical activity, or illnesses causing vomiting and diarrhoea.

According to the UK National Health Services (NHS), babies and infants, who have a low body weight, older people, who are less aware that they are becoming dehydrated, people with a long-term health condition, such as diabetes or alcoholism, and athletes are at risk of dehydration.

Dr Bendre shares that the colour of your urine can offer valuable insights into your hydration status. According to him, the human body is like a well-tuned machine, which needs proper hydration to keep it running smoothly.

“If your urine turns dark, it might be signalling dehydration. When your urine is too dark, it's a strong indicator of severe dehydration. This means your body lacks the necessary fluids to perform basic functions,” he says.

According to the doctor, deeper shades can also suggest other health issues, so it's crucial to consult a medical professional if this persists.

What Colour Should Your Urine Exactly Be

The normal colour of your urine is pale yellow. This suggests that your body is getting the right amount of water it needs to carry out various bodily functions.

Do not confuse clear urine with healthy hydration levels, the doctor warns, saying, “If your urine is nearly clear, like water, you might be overhydrated. While staying hydrated is important, excessive water intake can flush out essential electrolytes from your body, potentially leading to an imbalance. It's all about finding the right balance.”

“Stick to the pale yellow range – not too light, not too dark,” he adds.

How Much Water Should You Drink In A Day

According to the US National Academies of Medicine, adequate fluid intake comprises about 3.7 litres (15.5 cups) of fluids a day for men and about 2.7 litres (11.5 cups fluid a day in women.

Along with a dark-coloured urine, here are some symptoms of dehydration and signals that your body needs to up its water intake:

  • Feeling thirsty
  • Dry and sticky mouth and lips
  • Less frequent urination
  • Tiredness and low energy levels
  • Drop in blood pressure leading to dizziness
  • Dry and less elastic skin
  • Headaches
  • Muscle cramps
  • Confusion

Bottomline

Keeping an eye on your urine colour is important to understand your hydration levels. Light, pale yellow urine generally signifies proper hydration, while darker shades can suggest dehydration. Dehydration occurs when the body lacks sufficient fluids to function optimally, leading to a range of symptoms. Make sure to follow proper hydration practices, such as drinking an adequate amount of fluids. This way, you can maintain your health and prevent the potential risks associated with severe dehydration.
