The colour and clarity of urine can provide valuable insights into our health. While clear urine is generally considered a sign of good hydration, cloudy urine might raise concerns, which may cause anxiety and worry in people. Cloudy urine is characterised by a hazy or milky appearance that can leave you wondering about its underlying causes. We spoke to Dr Sumit Sharma, Director and Head of the Department, Urology, Uro-Oncology, Andrology, Uro-Robotics, Sanar International Hospitals, Gurugram, Haryana, who explained the reasons that might be the cause of cloudy urine and when you should seek a doctor's attention.
Reasons Your Urine is Cloudy
Dehydration
"Dehydration is one of the most typical causes of cloudy urine," said Dr Sharma. He added that when the body lacks sufficient fluids, the urine becomes more concentrated, leading to cloudiness and yellow discolouration. He suggested that increasing water intake can often resolve this issue, restoring the urine's clarity.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
UTIs are another frequent cause of cloudy urine. "These infections occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract, causing inflammation and cloudiness due to the presence of White Blood Cells (WBCs) and bacteria," explained Dr Sharma. He added that UTIs may also be accompanied by other symptoms, such as a burning sensation during urination, frequent urges to urinate, and abdominal pain.
Proteinuria
"Excessive protein in the urine is referred to as proteinuria," said the doctor. He added that this condition can also give the urine a cloudy appearance. "This condition may indicate kidney problems, such as glomerulonephritis or kidney damage. Individuals with proteinuria may also experience swelling in the hands, feet, or face," he said.
Kidney Stones
If your urine is cloudy, there are chances that you might have kidney issues, such as kidney stones. "These small, hard deposits can cause irritation and inflammation in the urinary tract, resulting in cloudy urine along with pain in the lower back or abdomen," said Dr Sharma. He mentioned that if your urine comes with blood, it may accompany kidney stones.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
"Certain STIs, such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, can lead to cloudy urine," said the doctor. He highlighted that these infections can cause inflammation and discharge, making the urine appear cloudy. "Thus, it's important to address STIs promptly to prevent complications," he suggested.
Medications
If you have some health issues, there are chances that your urine may be cloudy as a side-effect of medication. To be sure, you should talk to your healthcare provider.
When to Seek Medical Attention
"While occasional cloudy urine might not be a cause for alarm, persistent cloudiness, especially when accompanied by other symptoms, should prompt a visit to a healthcare professional," stated Dr Sharma.
He added that if you experience pain, discomfort, fever, or notice blood in your urine alongside cloudiness, it's crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
Conclusion
Cloudy urine can result from a variety of factors, ranging from benign issues like dehydration to serious conditions, such as infections and kidney problems. Paying attention to your body's signals, staying hydrated, and seeking medical advice are essential steps in maintaining your urinary health. If you're unsure about changes in your urine's appearance, consulting a healthcare provider is the best option.
