A recent school health survey conducted by the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) in Chennai revealed a concerning fact- Around 56% of teen girls and 41% of teen boys in the state are anaemic. 

The survey was conducted among 14 lakh students in government and government-aided schools between 10-19 years of age. According to the World Health Organisation, anaemia is a medical condition which is characterised by deficient red blood cells or their haemoglobin concentration is lower than what it should be. This reduces the capacity of blood to transfer oxygen to the body’s tissues, resulting in symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, dizziness and shortness of breath.

The DPH survey reveals the need for parents and teenagers alike to be aware of their diet and consumption of foods that can aid haemoglobin and red blood synthesis. Here are some superfoods you should add to your family’s diet this winter, especially if you or your child stand a chance of becoming anaemic:

According to a study published in the Journal of Micronutrient Analysis lean meats, such as chicken and turkey, are excellent sources of both iron and protein. The heme iron found in meat is easily absorbed by the body, making it a valuable addition to a teen girl's diet. Including lean meats in meals supports the replenishment of iron stores and provides essential amino acids for overall health.

Lentils and Legumes - Plant-Based Iron Sources

Teen girls can also obtain iron from plant-based sources like lentils and legumes, especially in anaemic teen girls according to The Journal of Nutrition. These foods are not only rich in iron but also provide fibre, which aids digestion. Using lentils in soups, stews, or salads offers a nutrient-dense and vegetarian-friendly option for managing anaemia.

Nuts and Seeds - Nutrient-Packed Snacking

Almonds, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds are rich in iron and can be included as healthy snacks. These nuts and seeds also offer a variety of vitamins and minerals that contribute to overall well-being.

It is unfortunate that these recent statistics by the DPH survey have not revealed anything new.
