Body Cleansing: 7 Summer Foods To Help Remove Toxins From The Body

In our modern sedentary lifestyles, filled with processed foods and environmental pollutants, our bodies often accumulate toxins that can impact our overall health and well-being. It's like a buildup of unwanted waste that needs to be flushed out to restore vitality. Just like how a cluttered room can affect our mood, a toxin-laden body can hinder our optimal functioning. In this article, we will explore the concept of body cleansing and more.

Understanding Body Cleansing

As per Dietician Priya Bansal, MSc Nutrition, formerly worked at Apollo Hospital, Delhi, "Body cleansing, also known as detoxification, refers to the process of eliminating harmful substances and waste products from the body." It is a way to support the body's natural detoxification systems and enhance its ability to heal and function optimally. By incorporating specific foods into your diet, you can aid the cleansing process and promote overall well-being.

Signs That Your Body Contains Toxins

1) Low Energy Levels

Bansal said that, if you are constantly feeling tired, sluggish, or lack energy, it may indicate that your body is burdened with toxins.

2) Skin Issues

Persistent skin problems like acne, rashes, or dull complexion can be a reflection of toxin buildup in the body.

3) Digestive Problems

Frequent bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhoea may indicate an overloaded digestive system struggling to eliminate toxins.

4) Brain Fog

Bansal highlighted that toxins can affect cognitive function, leading to difficulty focusing, memory issues, and mental fatigue.

5) Excessive Weight Gain

If you find it challenging to maintain a healthy weight despite your efforts, toxin accumulation could be a contributing factor. According to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, toxins that build up have a big impact on obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

6) Weakened Immune System

Frequent illnesses, allergies, or a compromised immune response may suggest an overloaded system trying to eliminate toxins.

7) Mood Swings

Toxins can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to mood swings, anxiety, depression, or irritability.

Summer Foods To Help Remove Toxins

Here are seven foods recommended by the expert.

1) Watermelon

With its high water content and natural detoxifying properties, watermelon helps flush out toxins and keeps you hydrated.

2) Cucumber

Known for its refreshing and hydrating properties, cucumbers are rich in antioxidants and fibre. They promote hydration, aid digestion, and support kidney function, helping to eliminate toxins from the body.

3) Lemon

Packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, lemon stimulates liver enzymes, which are essential for detoxification. Squeezing fresh lemon juice into water or incorporating it into salads can enhance the cleansing process.

4) Berries

Blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are not only delicious but also loaded with antioxidants that aid in detoxification. These colourful berries can help neutralise toxins and protect against cellular damage.

5) Leafy Greens

Incorporating leafy greens like spinach, kale, and arugula into your summer meals can provide a range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These greens support liver function and aid in the removal of toxins from the body.
