When it comes to detox diets, there’s a lot of buzz about how they can ‘cleanse’ the body, but is all the hype necessary? The human body is already equipped with its own highly effective detox system, mainly involving the liver, kidneys, lungs, and skin. These organs work continuously to filter out toxins, eliminate waste, and maintain the body’s balance. So, while detox diets are marketed as essential for cleansing, their necessity is often overstated. We spoke to our expert Vidhi Chawla, Dietitian, Founder, Fisico Diet and Aesthetic Clinic, who explained how the body’s natural detoxification works and why a balanced approach might be more beneficial than extreme diet plans.
The Myth of Detox Diets
“Detox diets often promise rapid weight loss, a renewed sense of energy, and a ‘cleaner’ system, typically through juice cleanses or supplements that restrict certain foods. While these approaches might show temporary results, they generally don’t support long-term health. Many detox diets limit essential nutrients like protein, fats, and fibre, which can leave people feeling fatigued and nutrient-deficient,” said Chawla.
A 2019 study with 22 women revealed that taking a detox supplement containing a proprietary blend of 1,350 milligrams of ingredients like papaya leaf, cascara sagrada bark, slippery elm bark, peppermint leaf, red raspberry leaf, fenugreek seed, ginger root, and senna leaf for four weeks showed no health benefits.

Nutritional Approaches to Support Detoxification
Instead of relying on short-term detox plans, focusing on a balanced diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods can provide sustainable support for the body’s natural detox processes.
"Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats all play a crucial role. These foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress and support liver function," advised Chawla.
Hydration is Key
One of the simplest yet most powerful tools for natural detoxification is proper hydration. "Water is essential in every cellular process, including the breakdown and removal of toxins. Hydration not only supports the kidneys in filtering out waste but also maintains skin health and aids digestion," added Chawla. Including water-rich foods like cucumbers, oranges, and melons can help meet daily hydration needs while supplying beneficial nutrients.

Lifestyle Factors
Nutrition and hydration are vital, but lifestyle factors also play a significant role in the body’s natural detox efforts. Here are some measures that you should follow, as listed by the expert:
- Regular physical activity promotes blood circulation, which supports the lymphatic system in removing waste from the body.
- Exercise also triggers sweating, another way the body expels toxins.
- Prioritising sleep is equally important, as this is when the body repairs itself and removes waste from the brain through the glymphatic system.
- Mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation can help reduce stress, which has a direct impact on hormonal balance and immune health, both essential for efficient detoxification.
Consulting a Professional
Chawla concluded, "For those considering a detox diet, consulting with a registered dietitian or healthcare professional is wise. They can provide personalised guidance and help you understand the best ways to support your body’s natural detoxification mechanisms without resorting to restrictive diets."
