7 Tasty Summer Drinks To Relieve Constipation

As the summer heat intensifies, many people find themselves dealing with the uncomfortable issue of constipation. It's a common problem that can put a damper on your summer enjoyment. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind constipation, address the misconception about protein intake, and introduce seven tasty Indian drinks that can help relieve constipation.

Why Constipation Happens

According to Dietician Priya Bansal, MSc Nutrition, formerly worked at Apollo Hospital, Delhi, "Constipation occurs when bowel movements become infrequent or difficult." Several factors can contribute to this condition:

Dehydration

Staying hydrated is critical during the hot summer months. According to Bansal, dehydration can have an impact on the digestive tract and contribute to constipation.

Low Fiber Intake

Diets low in fibre can lead to slow bowel movements and difficulty passing stool. Fibre adds bulk to the stool, promoting regularity and smooth bowel movements. Bansal advised incorporating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to make up for the fibre intake.

Lack Of Physical Activity

Physical inactivity can slow down the digestive process and lead to constipation. Movement stimulates the muscles in the digestive tract, helping food move through more efficiently.

Can Eating More Protein Cause Constipation?

Bansal said that it is a misconception that increased protein consumption can cause constipation. She added that while it's true that protein-rich foods like meat and dairy may contain less fibre, the key to avoiding constipation is to maintain a well-balanced diet that includes an adequate amount of fibre, fluids, and physical activity. Simply increasing protein intake alone is not directly linked to constipation.

7 Tasty Indian Drinks To Relieve Constipation

1) Aam Panna

A refreshing drink made from green mangoes, aam panna is not only delicious but also rich in fibre. Bansal stated that green mangoes contain pectin, a soluble fibre that aids in digestion and helps relieve constipation.

2) Saunf (Fennel) Water

Bansal mentioned that fennel seeds have natural digestive properties and can help relieve constipation. Soaking a teaspoon of fennel seeds in a glass of water overnight and drinking it the next morning can provide relief.

3) Buttermilk

Buttermilk is a traditional Indian drink known for its digestive benefits. It contains probiotics that aid in maintaining a healthy gut and relieving constipation. According to Bansal, "The probiotics in buttermilk help regulate the balance of bacteria in the gut, promoting smooth digestion and regular bowel movements."

4) Jeera (Cumin) Water

Bansal highlighted that cumin seeds have carminative properties that can stimulate digestion and alleviate constipation. Boiling a teaspoon of cumin seeds in a glass of water, straining the mixture, and drinking it warm can provide relief.

5) Coconut Water

Coconut water is not only a refreshing summer beverage but also contains natural electrolytes that aid digestion. It can help soften stool and promote regular bowel movements.

6) Pudina (Mint) Lemonade

Mint has a soothing effect on the digestive system and can help relieve constipation. Mixing freshly squeezed lemon juice, mint leaves, and water creates a refreshing and digestion-friendly summer drink.
