Certain precautions to be taken before the treatment include not irritating the skin by shaving, waxing, bleaching or any other hair removal techniques for at least five days before the treatment. Scrubbing of the skin should be avoided. The skin should not be having any active infections at the time of chemical peels treatment.
After the procedure, the doctor will give you certain guidelines to be followed or certain medications can be prescribed too. Few precautions after the procedure include avoiding exposure of the skin to sun rays as the new skin is extremely sensitive and prone to sun burns. Avoid hot showers and strenuous exercises. Do not scratch the flaking skin as it may cause scarring and negate the efficacy of treatment.
Depending on the type of chemical peel used, aftercare routine may vary from each treatment. Superficial chemical peels need only basic aftercare while deep peeling can mean more recovery time and more care. The basic guideline to follow after any chemical peel is to avoid exposure to sun rays as the skin is sensitive. To quicken the healing process, protect the skin from sun exposure. Keep the treated skin moist and rinse with cold water followed by application of any prescribed ointment. Patients who have undergone deep peeling may be put on a liquid diet for some days.
