A sitz bath is a warm and shallow bath that is taken to soothe the area between the rectum and vulva or scrotum. It helps relax the anal sphincter and boost blood circulation to promote healing. There is a common notion that women should avoid sitz bathing during this period. Is it a myth or reality? This article will explain it to you.

To understand this better, we reached out to Dr Chetna Jain, Director Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Sector 14, Gurgaon.

Can You Take a Sitz Bath During Periods?

Dr Jain confirms that a sitz bath can generally be taken during periods and may actually help relieve discomfort associated with menstruation. “A sitz bath involves sitting in warm, shallow water that covers the pelvic and vaginal area. It is commonly recommended to soothe pain, improve hygiene, and promote relaxation,” adds the expert.

She continues, “During periods, many women experience cramps, pelvic heaviness, irritation, or soreness. A warm sitz bath may help relax the pelvic muscles and improve blood circulation. The warmth of the water can provide temporary relief from menstrual cramps and help the body feel more relaxed. Some women also find it soothing for vaginal irritation or discomfort caused by prolonged pad use.”
