The 82-year-old announced it on Instagram after an MRI spotted a cancerous lesion on his left lung. It came on the heels of 11 weeks battling stubborn bronchitis, even after returning to the stage at Westgate Las Vegas, his doc insisted on the scan. Pure luck caught it early, he says, dodging chemo or radiation. Now surgery awaits, with January shows rescheduled. Fans rally, grateful for his upbeat vibe.

In his post, Manilow wrote: "The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. That’s the good news. The bad news is... I’m going into surgery... No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns." Doctors don't think it's spread—more tests confirm. He's bummed about shifting fan plans but eyes a quick recovery.

The cancer was found at an early stage, which allowed doctors to take swift action. The cancerous spot was surgically removed, and medical experts involved in his care determined that further aggressive treatments such as chemotherapy were unnecessary.

Why Chemotherapy Is Not Part of His Treatment Plan

Doctors base lung cancer treatment on several factors, including how far the cancer has spread and the patient’s overall health. In Manilow’s case, the cancer was localised, meaning it had not spread beyond the lung.

Because of this, doctors opted for surgical treatment followed by monitoring rather than chemotherapy. Avoiding chemotherapy can help patients, especially older adults, sidestep side effects such as severe fatigue, nausea, and lowered immunity.
