What to Eat After Vomiting at Night During Pregnancy: Gentle Foods to Soothe Your Stomach

Pregnancy is not without its unpleasantness, and perhaps the worst is nausea and vomiting. For most women, it is worse at night when the body really needs to rest. Waking up after being sick or experiencing nausea before bed can have you tired, hungry, and wondering what to eat. The solution is easy: you just want to quiet your stomach without it getting worse. To assist with the query, we had Rakshita Mehra, Clinical Dietitian and Nutritionist based in Delhi to provide her top food suggestions for soothing the stomach after vomiting at night during pregnancy.

1. Chaach (Buttermilk)

Chaach is a mild, soothing beverage prepared with yogurt and water. "It has an alkaline nature, which soothes acid reflux and relieves that persisting nausea," informs Rakshita. It's also probiotic-rich, supporting good gut bacteria and digestion. You can have chaach cold, and to give it more oomph, add some crushed mint or a pinch of roasted jeera (cumin) powder. It's easy to digest, hydrating, and light on the stomach, exactly what you want after vomiting.

2. Ginger Sips

Ginger has been used for centuries to alleviate nausea. Why it is successful is due to a natural chemical known as gingerol. "Drinking ginger water in small sips can help settle the stomach," advises Rakshita. You can create a basic ginger brew by boiling up fresh ginger slices in water and allowing it to cool slightly before drinking. Don't gulp it down. Take it slowly and allow it to work its way through your system.

3. Banana1 - 2025-07-15T154215.118

Bananas are a safe bet after vomiting for a few basic reasons. They're soft, gentle on the stomach, and full of potassium—something your body may be deficient in after vomiting. "Bananas also provide an instant energy boost without irritating the stomach," Rakshita adds. You can have it plain, mash it, or even prepare a light banana shake with toned or double-toned milk. Banana toast is another suggestion she makes, just a slice of plain toast spread with mashed banana.

4. Moong Dal Water

This is another soothing choice that's both light and filling. "Moong dal water is high in potassium and magnesium, and it's a very easy way of having protein," says Rakshita. It's prepared by soaking well-cleaned moong dal (yellow split lentils), cooking them until they become soft, and then straining the water. Don't add spices to it and keep it plain. It's warm, mild, and will not irritate your stomach further.

5. Mashed Potatoes3 - 2025-07-15T154344.804

When your digestive system is sensitive, plain mashed potatoes can be incredibly comforting. They're soft and bland and give some much-needed energy. "Just don't add fried toppings, butter or spicy powders," advises Rakshita. You want the bare minimum, no masala, no oil. A small bowl of mashed potatoes is easy to digest and easy to eat.

6. Simple Broths and Soups

Thin vegetable soups or low-calorie chicken broths are a good go-to too. They provide hydration and some nutrients without being overwhelming. "Just stay away from any soups with beans, mutton, or high oil content," suggests Rakshita. Consider boiled veggies, a clear chicken broth, or even plain clear soup. Warm, comforting, and gentle enough for a sensitive stomach.

What to Avoid2 - 2025-07-15T154346.936

Right after vomiting, avoid spicy, greasy, or packaged foods. Chips, fried snacks, or anything with strong masala can trigger your nausea again. Give your stomach time to calm down before adding complex or heavy meals back in. A study conducted in Obstetrics & Gynecology discovered ginger greatly diminished nausea symptoms among pregnant women, particularly when consumed in small doses throughout the day. The research endorsed ginger as a natural, safe choice for women experiencing morning or evening sickness.

Conclusion

Once you vomit overnight when you are pregnant, the prime concern is to calm, rather than upset your stomach. Keep to soothing foods that are light to digest, pack enough nutrition, and won't upset you further. Even small sips or bites can make you feel better and stop further nausea. Listen to your body, take it slow, and always contact your doctor in case of continued vomiting or worsening symptoms.
