The female reproductive system is more complex than you think. It consists of various organs - both external and internal, such as vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. To understand the intricacies and functions of the reproductive organs, you need an expert eye, particularly a gynaecologist, who specialises in women’s health.
Several instances may demand a visit to the gynaecologist. Speaking with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Jyoti Sharma, Senior Consultant-Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram, lists some of them in the article.
Role Of Gynaecologist
A gynaecologist is a doctor who deals with women's health, especially the female reproductive system. An obstetrician, on the other hand, is a kind of gynaecologist, who specialises in pregnancy and childbirth.
The role of the gynaecologist involves examining, diagnosing, and treating issues associated with the female reproductive system. They conduct screenings for reproductive abnormalities, cancer and also perform tests for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

Some of the common treated conditions by a gynaecologist include problems linked to fertility, menstruation, and menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome, ovarian cysts, fibroids, breast disorders, and certain cancers.
When Should You Visit A Gynaecologist
Common signs that demand a gynaecologist visit include:
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Severe menstrual pain
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Persistent pelvic pain
- Discomfort during sexual intercourse
Dr Sharma adds, “Any unusual vaginal discharge, foul odour, itching, or burning sensation might also indicate an infection or other issues requiring medical attention. Changes in breast tissue, such as lumps, pain, or nipple discharge, should not be ignored.”
Additionally, if a woman is planning to start a family, consulting a gynaecologist for preconception advice is advisable, according to the doctor.
Important Screenings
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some of the most common reproductive health concerns for women include endometriosis, uterine fibroids, gynaecological cancers like cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer, and HIV/AIDS. PCOS and Interstitial Cystitis (IC), which is a chronic bladder condition, are also prevalent.
Dr Sharma says, “Women over 21 should conduct regular pap smears and pelvic exams for cervical health, and those over 40 should discuss menopause-related concerns with their gynaecologists.”

While pap smears are used to screen for cervical cancer, checks for the size and shape of the uterus and ovaries and detects any tender areas and unusual growths.
In addition, the doctor shares that a gynaecologist can provide guidance on birth control, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, and overall reproductive well-being.
Bottomline
When it comes to your health, doctors are your best friend. They guide you and provide you with the necessary measures needed to avoid any form of disease or illnesses. A gynaecologist helps treat issues related to the female reproductive system. All anyone has to do is be open to communication and avoid any form of shame or embarrassment. Remember, you’re not alone.
