In a world obsessed with diet culture and the pursuit of the perfect body, we often overlook the importance of nourishing ourselves adequately. However, undereating can have a negative impact on our physical and emotional health.
We spoke to Dr Somnath Gupta, Consultant Physician and Diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, who listed signs you are not eating enough.
Undernutrition is one of the most significant public health issues, affecting more than 900 million people worldwide, according to the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. Dr Gupta said that when you are not eating enough, your body may send various signals indicating that it needs more nourishment.
Signs Of Undereating
Constant fatigue
Dr Gupta noted that if you frequently feel tired, even after getting enough sleep, it could be a sign of insufficient calorie intake. Your body needs energy from food to function properly, and inadequate consumption can lead to fatigue. The National Health Services (NHS) UK recommends 2,000 calories per day for women and 2,500 calories per day for men as a daily caloric intake.
Frequent mood swings
A lack of proper nutrition can affect your mood and mental well-being. If you find yourself experiencing frequent mood swings, irritability, or difficulty concentrating, it could be due to inadequate calorie intake.
Constant hunger
Dr Gupta highlighted one of the most prominent signs of not eating enough is persistent hunger. If you're frequently hungry or have intense cravings, it may indicate that your body needs more fuel.

Weight loss or difficulty maintaining weight
If you're consistently losing weight without intentionally trying to do so, it suggests that you're not consuming enough calories to meet your body's needs. Similarly, difficulty maintaining a healthy weight can be a sign of insufficient food intake.
Hair loss and brittle nails
Inadequate nutrition can lead to hair loss and brittle nails. When your body lacks essential nutrients, it prioritises vital functions over maintaining healthy hair and nails. This can be due to a deficiency of nutrients, such as iron, zinc, and biotin.
Decreased immunity
Dr Gupta added that a compromised immune system is another sign of inadequate nutrition. When you consistently undereat, your body lacks the necessary nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, to support a robust immune system. As a result, you may experience frequent illnesses, prolonged recovery periods, and a general decline in overall health.

Poor Skin Health
Your skin reflects your overall health, and insufficient food intake can lead to poor skin health. If you notice dryness, dullness, or an increase in acne or other skin issues, it might indicate that you need to eat more. According to the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), vitamin deficiency affects skin health and can cause skin disorders, such as scurvy and impaired wound healing.
Bottomline
Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet is essential for our physical and mental well-being. It's important to remember that these signs can also be caused by other factors, so if you're concerned about your health, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate advice.
