World Health Day 2025: How Preventive Care At Work Is Shaping A Healthier Workforce

Most of us spend more time at work than anywhere else, so it makes sense that our jobs play a big role in how we feel, physically and mentally. But in the rush to meet deadlines and chase goals, health often takes a backseat. This World Health Day, there’s a growing focus on how preventive care at the workplace can keep people healthier, happier, and more productive in the long run.

Employee wellness is increasingly becoming a priority for organisations. Healthier employees are perceived as being more productive and have higher job satisfaction. Instead of giving conventional benefits or fitness allowances, businesses across different industries are now implementing comprehensive wellness programs that target physical, mental, and emotional well-being," said Dr Mayanka Lodha Seth, Chief Pathologist, Redcliffe Labs, Udaipur.

2012 study found that workers who went to wellness programs had greater job satisfaction and lower perceived stress levels than those who did not go.

"This direct correlation between well-being and job satisfaction encourages companies to incorporate health initiatives into their workplace strategies. These initiatives not only enhance employee morale but also productivity and engagement," added Dr Seth.

Significance of Preventive Healthcare

Preventive care aids in the detection of potential health problems before they escalate. Rather than waiting to address illnesses when they occur, preventive care encourages regular health monitoring and early intervention.

Most importantly, preventive healthcare plays a crucial role in managing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular conditions. A study published in the journal Preventive Medicine found that individuals who underwent annual physical examinations had a 45% lower hazard of mortality compared to those who did not.

Early diagnosis through routine screenings helps employees manage potential health risks more effectively, leading to better long-term health outcomes. As lifestyle-related illnesses become more prevalent, companies prioritise proactive healthcare measures to support their workforce.

"India is witnessing a growing trend of incorporating preventive healthcare measures into corporate policies. More companies are including Outpatient Department (OPD) expenses under group insurance plans. Sectors, such as healthcare, power, engineering, and BFSI are seeing a 30-40% increase in these benefits, reflecting a growing commitment to proactive healthcare management in the workplace," added Dr Seth.

Organisations are seeking beyond traditional health coverage by bringing wellness into their organisational culture. "Periodic health check-ups, fitness contests, and wellness workshops are now routine components of employees' benefit packages. Employers are even focusing on mental wellness through organising support sessions and creating awareness about stress management and emotional stability," highlighted Dr Seth.

Some organisations adopt personalised healthcare plans, including lifestyle management sessions and customised health initiatives. These initiatives enable employees to stay healthy proactively and not just treat problems when they occur. Not only do these prevent chronic conditions, but also ensure that people maintain an active approach towards their well-being.

Positive effects of workplace wellness programs

"Employees who feel supported in maintaining their health are more likely to stay engaged and committed at work. Research consistently shows that a health-oriented work culture leads to decreased absenteeism and improved morale." A study published in International Journal of Quality in Health Care reported a positive association between employee engagement and patient safety, indicating that engaged employees help improve organisational outcomes.

"Those participating in wellness initiatives feel more energised, less stressed, and more able to concentrate on their work. This conducive environment not only leads to better performance but also improved workplace relationships", said Dr Seth.

Organisations that spend on preventive healthcare observe not just healthier workers but also stronger team unity. Feeling valued by their employers, employees are more likely to remain loyal, leading to reduced turnover and long-term business sustainability.

Bottomline

Dr Seth. "Investment in workplace wellness is not a mere add-on; it is a proactive strategy for enabling a resilient and sustainable workforce. Preventive care-focused companies are poised to better serve their workforce's health while enhancing productivity. As more companies and businesses move towards a health-centric workplace culture, they are building a healthier India."
